Streeterville and the Loop are probably the most expensive parts of Chicago. This place is right off the Loop. Its amazing, like I said, just need a place somewhere warm to escape the cold a few weeks out of the year :)

False. River North is the most expensive area in Chicago. After that you have Old Town, then (maybe) Streeterville, with the Loop thereafter.

No one wants to live in the Loop in Chicago. Try walking around the loop during the weekend, it's completely dead. I'm not talking about the little stretch on Michigan Ave. I'm talking downtown.

Wow, that is crazy. I was looking on streeteasy and found a comp for my place that was roughly $3.9MM in NYC, but I was thinking there is no way that could be the average. $2.5MM seems more realistic, which is still crazy.

Chicago is an amazing city. Great schools, tons if finance and a major metro in the US. IMO, I would live there over NYC any day.

Better watch what you say on these forums, we are about to get firebombed by the prestige whoring B-schooler crowd that frequents this site.

Stick to the script... top 7 target and BB in NYC or go bury your head in the sand :)

Sorry for calling you out, but I just wanted to point out (for others that are unfamiliar with Chicago) that the Loop is actually much cheaper than other areas of the city. This is primarily due to the fact that nothing really goes on in downtown Chicago. There's no good bars, restaurants, or anything besides your happy hour locations within proximity of your office. Come 9pm on a friday, you will likely be the only patron in the bar or streets. It's actually kind of creepy.

However, regarding cost of living of Chicago vs. any other major city, you are spot on that Chicago is absurdly cheap. I moved from Chicago (actually downtown, which is why i chimed in) to LA, and my rent alone increased 100%.
