Do you get paid more as an Associate coming from 2 years IB vs 2 years at a smaller REPE shop?
Currently at a reputable REPE shop with $10-40 bn AUM. I am thinking about moving to another firm for my associate years after my 2 analyst years and was wondering if people coming out of IB get paid more at that level vs someone in my situation. For reference I joined my firm straight out of undergrad and have no IB experience.
No
If anything you’ll get paid more coming from a smaller REPE shop. I did the IB route and a lot of the good firms are requiring prior buyside experience for associate roles
Really? Interesting to hear. Which shops have you had this experience with?
Oaktree and sculptor are two main ones that come to mind. Oaktree used to be 100% former IBers but when the recruiter reached out to me the job description requested at least 6 months of buyside experience. You can see it in their recent hires too
Have you made this switch yet. I am in a current position right now and want to switch over to a MF Repe
Yes. Moved to an MF. Got multiple MF offers too.
Wow congrats on the switch. Do you have any tips on this process? I just started at a 8B+ AUM REPE shop but my pay for the amount of hours I work is terrible. Do you think 1 year of experience is enough to move over to a MF?
I've seen Eastdil analysts grab associate gigs at some of the better shops for sure. Going to depend on the team though.
Yes and no. Depending on where you're doing your IB stint, you'll likely have a pipeline to firms via recruiting that are quite exclusive (megafunds typically recruit REGAL analysts from the BAML/JPM/MS of the world). These firms pay more typically like traditional PE. In essence, yes; there's just a bifurcation.
you guys still get paid??
So do CBRE analysts just get like GP tier roles? How does a senior IS sales analyst in a tier 1.5 market like california (non LA) or Miami get into MF repe?
yep well-known CB’s analysts are only allowed to exit to the very official GP tier.
Do you…do you think “LP” jobs are superior to “GP” jobs?
I mean there's a difference in some Owner Operator GP and Carlyle/BX and the type of candidates that are allowed to join. The question is valid...
Also yes, GP jobs pay worse at all levels below VP/Dev MGR.
