How to get Argus exposure when your shop doesn’t use Argus…

I’m in my first year at a small dev shop and really like it but know I want to get into acquisitions or capital markets at some point so I can’t help but look ahead. I’m getting what I can out of the experience in front of me but I always like to keep learning outside of the work when I can. While things are slow I’ve taken some time to build out some skills I lack, one of which would be Argus. It’s not used where I work but relevant experience when applying many places. Is it worth paying for a course so I can get it on my resume? Or just any tips on how to approach recruiting without it on my resume? Thanks

Let me start off by saying it is not worth the $1350+ you have to pay to get the certification. Just get an old manual from the internet or a friend (that's what I did), familiarize yourself and tell recruiters you took a couple classes for it in college. Chances are if they ask they are looking for someone with Argus experience within their current job, not just a certification course, so at the end of the day it won't matter.

If you're trying to break into acquisitions you're better off networking and honing your underwriting/excel skills. My shop only does multifamily for the most part and we never use Argus - it's more so for retail and office where they have to deal with complex cash flows stemming from lease expirations + renewal options. Try recruiting at smaller to middle market shops - in my experience it was only the big guys like JLL and Cushman that really cared about ARGUS experience for entry level analyst roles. Hope this helped.

Agree with the above poster. Definitely do not take the class/cert unless someone else is paying for it but try to get one of the guides from someone. Also, Argus is not very complicated and is fairly intuitive if you have a firm grasp of modeling in Excel. You can also always call their help desk when you do get an Argus account and they can walk you through stuff over the phone.
