RE IB Analyst Prep

Hi all, current college senior looking to break into RE IB here.

I'm prepping to interview with a RE IB group and was wondering if anyone has any particular concepts/guides/news sources that I should check out in preparation. I understand that I'll also need to be familiar with general IB concepts (400Q guide and such) but am looking for info specifically on RE IB if anyone has any recommendations. For reference, my internship this past summer was on a REB banking team (lending and a bit of asset management for existing loans).

Thanks in advance to those who are able to help!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations for preparing for a Real Estate Investment Banking (RE IB) interview:

  1. General IB Concepts:

    • Utilize the 400Q guide to cover general investment banking concepts. This will ensure you have a solid foundation in the basics.
  2. Specific RE IB Preparation:

    • Interview Process: According to a thread on WSO, the REIB interview process can include both a resume walk-through and technical questions. Be prepared for both.
    • Technical Knowledge: Familiarize yourself with real estate-specific financial modeling, valuation techniques, and market analysis. Understanding how to underwrite deals and analyze real estate transactions is crucial.
    • Useful Resources:
      • Financial Modeling Resources: WSO offers financial modeling resources that can be particularly useful for RE IB.
      • Excel Resources: Proficiency in Excel is essential, so make sure to utilize any available Excel resources.
      • Real Estate Investment Banking Threads: Review threads on WSO related to REIB for insights and advice from others who have gone through the process.
  3. News Sources:

    • Stay updated on recent M&A activities and general business news. Subscribing to sources like MorningBrew and Sorkin's Dealbook can be beneficial.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Networking: Engage with professionals in the industry to gain insights and advice.
    • Mock Interviews: Practice with mock interviews to get comfortable with the format and types of questions you might face.

By focusing on these areas, you'll be well-prepared for your RE IB interview. Good luck!
