Seeking Career Advice RE

I’m currently a student at Rutgers majoring in Finance w/ a decent GPA. I’m seeking to break into CRE after College and soon after transition into REPE. What would be your recommendation/advice on what to do next? What are realistic options After Rutgers since it’s not a target school? What are jobs/firms that offer a lot of experience in RE directly After College that would set me up for a successful career?

Thanks for any help!

For Megafund REPE, you would likely be in IB for 1-2 years at any coverage and then get your MBA. You could also be in REIB at a BB and make the transition. Honestly, my last boss went this route and he said he hardly knew anything operational about real estate.

You should do investment sales or debt and equity brokerage.. Start wherever you can but the big names are better than the small names. Work on your excel modeling.

You can go straight to REPE, maybe a small investment/development shop, most require you to experience, but the bigger names can and will train.

Any job that involves direct transaction experience. That cannot be stated enough. Sure, it looks great on the CV if you did investment sales at CBRE or debt & equity at JLL, but if you get an offer at a smaller shop with deal flow, I don't see much difference besides the branding (which is important at the start of your career, I'll add, but not the end-all-be-all)

If you can't get your foot in the door at a name brand shop, there is nothing wrong with taking a regional brokerage/lending/whatever role. Anything that involves deals is what you would want right away. Look for roles in investment sales, debt & equity, lending, even investment management / REPE if you can manage that. But worry about getting to REPE later on, experience should be #1 on your list.
