Starting out at name brand developer

What is the typical trajectory after starting out after college at a large name brand developer? do people just stay and work their way up? or go to smaller firms after a while or other large shops? i get RE has less of a formulaic career path than other fields but just curious about how others have done it!

I think people all three things you suggest..... Developers hire (poach) from other developers all the time, so as someone gains experience, skill, track record, they will have expanding options. If their "large name brand developer" doesn't promote them fast enough, they will probably leave for a promotion elsewhere (could be larger or smaller firm).

From my personal experience, people in development generally don't leave except during large market calamity (like 08 GFC, but those who left pretty much came back a few years later). Also, firm size or even brand isn't all that important compared to project scale/size/cool factor/etc. Clearly, firm culture and ethos can play a big role in whether people stay or leave (i.e. if you are treated well at a well run firm, you may not jump ship to a shithole that pays better, they do exist..)

I mean, not a single one of our regional offices has more than 20 people. Lot's of regional firms (who do huge/cool deals) probably have less than 20 people total. This is the reality of the development business, not tons of people required to execute deals even into the multiple 100s of millions. So much of the team can be outsourced project by project (architect/engineer/construction/lawyers/consultants/brokers/etc.), that the team can be lean all the way through!

Indeed, all three scenarios happen to people. In many ways, it depends on the specific position and on what people are looking for and what they are willing to do, what risks to take. See how the 25 Year Old Creative branding agency based in Melbourne works. It seems very similar to what you are planning to do, so you can make analogies. The ideas you have listed make sense, but it seems to me that one of the main points will be to do your work efficiently for a long time and rally people around you who will be burning with this idea. Of course, you should get acquainted with more and more people and show what you are capable of.
