Georgetown MBA brand name
How good is the Georgetown MBA brand name? I know any school outside the top 15 is usually a regional school. But how about Georgetown's reputation? I know Gtown places some kids on Wall St..but what happens when you go farther away.. like say in Chicago, Seattle, Houston or LA. Does it have brand value away from the east coast? Is the brand value across US any different from similar schools like Emory, Vandy, USC or Rice?
Also, it recently broke the top 20 in US News..but BW doesn't even rank it. Where would you guys put it? I am thinking it's a decent top 25 school.
top 25 in the AP poll.
Although the "name brand" comes from undergraduate, most BBs recruit MBA grads but they are only taking 1 or 2 grads each.
Looking at class profile, ~680 mean GMAT, 3.3 GPA
not the best numbers, but much like Rice, it is a program that benefits greatly from the caliber of its undergrad.
all of the BB's do recruit there, and since there are only about 250 students per class, 1-2 hires per BB sounds right. Don't forget the regional MMs and boutiques that must recruit there as well.
Salary-wise, the average salaries+signing bonus for MBA grads in the finance industry are on par with those at top-ranked schools, further evidence for solid recruiting.
Are there a lot of Georgetown alumni away from the mid atlantic/northeast area?
The majority of alumni on the street are the undergraduates. MBA's place more often than not in Mid Atlantic regionals.
Yeah, a lot of the people end up in mid-atlantic and North east, but I've seen a decent amount in asia, chicago, and Cali. A lot of banks come for grad, just in proportion since it's a smaller school than the top 10.
How is Georgetown for MBA? (Originally Posted: 01/12/2010)
Anyone know what chances are for IBD and PE out of Georgetown's MBA program? I know they are good for ugrad but is this true for MBA as well?
MBA there are a few people that make it to Wall Street each year. PE recruiting is almost non-existent. Banks in the Washington D.C. area are most likely to hire you.
Worked with a guy from G-town MBA this summer at a BB firm. Very sharp guy and he got/accepted an offer to return full-time. He did banking beforehand so I think he may have had a leg up in recruiting. Just my two cents though.
I think if you come in with the intention of banking and get at it from day one, you should able to find a job.
Bump. Also considering G-Town MBA, are your pretty restricted to the DC area?
No...GS, JPM, DB, Citi, BarCap, WFS, and Lazard all recruit from gtown MBA.
Yeah, it's pretty much Georgetown or the University of Maryland - College Park in the D.C. area. Both are in the top 30ish. Obviously, you have a bunch of garbage MBA programs in the D.C. area, like GWU, George Mason, Virginia Tech, UMBC, Johns Hopkins, etc. Seems like a waste of time to me.
solid school
It depends almost exclusively on your own background. You can read for yourself where the program ranks - it doesn't even begin to sniff the top 10. But if you've got good experience, want to be in DC, network and interview well, things will end well for you.
All the BB recruit Hoyas!

Anyone familar with the Georgetown MBA rep? Obviously not M7 material but curious to the Street pull or any notable programs...
What are your goals after getting an MBA? I wouldn't worry too much about the "ranking" if you are going for a MBA Rotational program.
Agreed, fair question- I'm gravitating towards general management/strategy, but have not narrowed down a specific industry yet. Coming from a corporate finance background. Would like the flexibility to move back into finance however. NYC locationally would be my strong preference as I own an apt here
Georgetown MBA - IBanking for career switcher? (Originally Posted: 03/31/2011)
I'm a career switcher, i'm currently a operations research quant at a Accenture/Deloitte consulting(4 years) and i'd like to go into IB after bschool. I also have an offer at Cornell's MBA program, however, I really liked Georgetown and I like DC way better than Ithaca.
Is Cornell MBA's placement into IB positions significantly better than Georgetown MBA?
I know Cornell's ranked higher in USNews, but how do the two schools compare in placing career switching students into IBanking?
Thanks yall!
Not sure, but I would assume that Cornell is going to give you more opportunities. Georgetown's MBA program is relatively new, so the network is not nearly as large as Cornell's.
G-town sucks for anything finance related.
I think Cornell is going to give you a better shot at IBD.
Cornell hands down will be better for your career aspirations. If you look at G-town's employment report, you'll see only two major banks hired more than one MBA grad. I imagine most of Georgetown's Finance grads go into corporate finance. It seems like only a handful make it into IBD. I'm going to be applying to MBAs R1 2011, and cut Georgetown off my list.
I appreciate your responses. I did look at Gtown's 2009-2010 employment report. It appears the following firms hired more than 1:
BoA Citi JPMorgan Wachovia
Georgetown MBA BusinessWeek full profile lists the following top employers:
They look fairly congruent.
Cornell's numbers:
From the employment reports, the comparison, for me at least, is inconclusive. I'd love to hear what anyone else on wall street has to say
