VP Interview

I've seen one historic thread on this. Just curious to get some first-hand data points here. I have a VP interview and a background with some experience that varies. I have worked at a smaller re-shop for the last five years and have been promoted to VP. Before that, I had some FoF experience and one year of fixed income.

I have extensive transaction experience, ran deals solo, sourced deals, can model, and currently manage analysts, all of the standard VP duties. I will be interviewing at a new shop next week and just wanted to figure out the typical structure of these processes. I know that I am qualified I want to get a better picture of what I am walking into, as I would love to get this gig. The firm is private without giving too much away with an AUM of $5-10bn.

I’ll give you my two cents based on my experience.

At VP level they’re likely hiring you more for a strategic reason than a manpower reason. I’d figure out what exactly the role is for - are they looking for an expert in a local market, do they want you to target a specific asset class or deal type, do they want you to open a new market, etc. Come armed to specifically talk about how your strategies, connections, or knowledge can advance the company further in the desired area. I would be surprised if they question you on skills too much, it’s kind of assumed you have the skills and plus you’ll have analysts for that.

I’d do my homework to understand the different parts of the company and some deals they’re currently working on. If you’re familiar with a current deal, probe and ask some questions and maybe share your approach and figure out why they look at it different.

Good luck and remember it’s always good to be 5 minutes early.
