When/How to bring up bonus range in interview process?

Hello all,

I am currently interviewing for an associate level position at a respected firm, I had a phone screen with HR and I will be interviewing with individuals at the associate level next. I know the base salary for the position, but I don't know the bonus range, and want a range on a percentage basis of what I can expect. Can I ask the associates what their histrorical bonus percentages have been? Should I just call the HR rep at some point during the process and ask? What is the most appropriate time/way to ask this?

Based on the WSO threads discussing salary negotiations, it's generally advisable to approach the topic of bonuses carefully and strategically during the interview process. Here’s how you can navigate this:

  1. Timing: It's typically more appropriate to discuss bonuses and additional compensation details once you are further along in the interview process, ideally when you are in discussions with HR or potentially after an offer has been extended. Asking about bonuses too early can sometimes be perceived as premature.

  2. Who to Ask: It's better to discuss financial compensations, including bonuses, with HR rather than with peers or potential future colleagues at the associate level. HR professionals are equipped to handle such queries and it keeps the conversation professional.

  3. How to Ask: When you decide it's the right time to bring up the topic, frame your question in a way that shows your understanding of the role and its responsibilities first. You might say something like, "I am very enthusiastic about the potential to contribute to your team. Could you provide some insight into the typical compensation package, including the base and bonus structure, for this role?"

Remember, demonstrating your primary interest in the role and the company before delving into compensation details reflects well on your professional priorities.

I would just give a quick call to HR, send an email if they don't answer saying "Blah blah nice to meet you, thank you for providing the salary range for this position. As I move through the process, I was wondering what the budget bonus amount is for this role?" or something like that.

Associates might give you wrong answer as bonus may have went down
