Why do you like your job?
Real Estate jobs come in many different flavors. From trading paper to straight up building from raw land to skyscapers it's all possible.
My questions are simple: many ppl want to work in real estate but have no idea which avenue in real estate suits them. So why do you like your job in real estate? What types of ppl would excel in your role? Is it possible to get in from a MBA? Do you need experience?
1) I like my job because it pays me very well, that's it
2) Anyone with technical acumen and a slight knowledge of real estate will succeed in a majority of RE roles, including mine
3) No need for an MBA, unless you want to come in as a VP or higher
4) Yes, will need about 2-3 years experience to get a look at our firm
Background: top 30 REPE firm, I sit in New York as a senior analyst focusing on acquisitions and asset management. Base salary $120k + 20-30% bonus. Semi-target education, graduated in 2017
Why don't you like your job? Would you rather be doing something else?
Every job, no matter what it is, will get old after awhile. That's part of it and the other part is that I'm not sure if I even like real estate. I'm a finance major working in this asset class, but have no idea what I want to do long term. Which is weird because I'm at firm and in a position that many on this board would kill for. But for now, I'm gonna stay where I'm at because there's not too many other roles I'd want to do in RE.
Pfft you think that’s sweet? Try working at a top 26 REPE firm.
I wanted to be an architect but then I realized I could just tell architects what to do and get paid more too.
TFW architects make less than journeymen electricians and concrete laborers with worse hours.
This is literally one of my friends - any solid advice you would give to them on how to make the move?
I entered out of college from the financial side (which is by far the lowest barrier to entry, particularly if one is hoping to attain a piece of the action) - so I really don't have much advice for an experienced professional. It's cliche but I got where I am purely through networking. Informational interviews, coffee chats, etc, they really do work.
Learn the financial side of things - sometimes this necessitates a degree, sometimes it doesn’t - and it’s a solid route.
I don't.
It's awesome to travel the country and learn what drives cities and neighborhoods; what draws people to certain places. Also, the compensation is on par with conventional finance roles (PE and Banking), but the work-life balance is much better.
Obviously the situation specific qualitative considerations: I like the people I work with, the company culture, flexibility in my schedule, etc. Pay is also good which is important. This is all adds up to me being in a good mood most days.
From a more macro perspective about why this is fulfilling though, I get to work on some of the most high-profile and transformative projects in my City & region. As someone who grew up where I work, this is important to me. Not to sound too drunk off the kool-aid, but I do feel like what I am working on is making a positive impact in our market, upping the City's profile and allowing me to work with some of the most innovative companies in the world who are actually impacting society.
I like my job because it pays me just enough to act like a fool outside of work without having to check my bank account each day
Can you give a ballpark on comp and years of experience??
$140k all in, 2 years experience. NYC based
the people I work with
GL in Hotels my dude
Still loving the hotel sector?
I get to be a deal whore.
A cool thing about working in REPE is that the deal activity is high compared to other sectors, at least in northern europe. So if you are a deal junkie, REPE is a place to get your fix!
