Working in REPE after grad, what to do now?
Hey all, after grad I'm going into REPE doing both equity and debt investments. I'm pretty good at modeling out a whole manner of both debt and equity deals due to relevant coursework and my internships (was able to complete modeling tests for FT fairly easily) but I don't have any experience or understanding of corporate finance and non-RE modeling. With all this coronavirus BS I have a lot of time on my hands and was wondering if it would be beneficial to take an online course or self-teach corporate valuation and learn how to model LBOs, M&A transactions etc. I understand that unless you work for a group like BREP where you're taking companies and REITs private etc. or working on larger scale transactions you most likely won't be using these techniques but would it ever come up or be useful to know in other REPE contexts? What else would you recommend I do or continue to learn to prepare myself for my job post-grad?
Nope, knowing how to model corporate buyouts will not help unless you are working in corporate buyouts. If you're interested in that sort of stuff by all means, go ahead. But personally I would spend the time working on yourself - read, get in shape, learn a language, pick up a hobby, that kind of bullshit.
I can promise you that in a year or two when you're in the office at 10:15 on a Thursday night running sensitivity tables that nobody but you will ever look at and your friends are texting you from the bar, you will not look back and think "gee I wish I had spent more of my downtime getting better at Excel"
Alternatively, he could be saying "shit boys I'd be there hours earlier if this dude on WSO didn't discourage me from burying myself in excel pre-grad".
