Building a Perfect Freshman Resume

Hey guys, I just re-worked my Resume for my upcoming Career Fair.

Do you have any tips for a freshman resume? What do employer's look at most? What areas do they focus more on? (In addition to GPA)

Please let me know what I can do to make it better, specifically the Jobs and Leadership section as there are quite a few things under it. Any ideas as to how I could divide that up and organize it better?

Also, should I adjust my experiences by date or by relevance?

Lastly, is it bad to put in how much money you manage in a personal investment portfolio? IE if it is over $100k vs under $100K. Do employers look down on this? Or do they see it as a way for a freshman to express that he/she is taking the initiative to manage their own money.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not really speaking from experience here, but I would assume that your ROI would be as important as the amount of money. If its good I would list that.

Wherever I see people doing something the way it's always been done, the way it's 'supposed' to be done, following the same old trends, well, that's just a big red flag to me to go look somewhere else. - Mark Cuban

Under interests, you have traveling before financial markets...I've had a hard ass look at my resume and make a comment about that. If financial markets are your main interest, put that first, otherwise traveling being first could have someone say "So Friday afternoons you'll be leaving early to go traveling? And then Monday mornings, you will be late getting back from your travels?" It was all said jokingly but, ya never know.

Couple things:

  • You have way too many experiences listed. I'd pick three ( probably Cigna, Student investment fund, and Bryant Suite) and have 2-3 points for each position. Make sure the points are a little more descriptive than currently, you're going to need to first explain what action you took and then what were the (great) results for the firm.

  • Make the actual bullet points a normal bullet points, the fleur-de-lis thing is a little over the top for finance.

  • Either unbold WORK or bold Leadership experience.

  • In the 'skills' section I'd delete photoshop and MS office and try to come up with some other things. Languages would be a good one especially since you said you liked travelling. (two L's)**

Overall you need to think from a recruiters perspective, always answering how your past experiences will be able to create value for this company. Main piece of advice- cut about half of it and bolster up everything you kept.

Thanks for the comments guys, they were all very helpful.

One last question, what kind of paper should I print on? I have heard Southworth Business paper is good (some prefer it over resume paper, even for resumes). I was thinking 100% cotton, 32lb? Or is that over the top? Is there a difference between 32lb and 24lb? What color? White or Creme?

Thanks a lot, this forum has been a huge help!
