Cut the 'my name is' crap.

They ought to know your major or college from your resume so no need to mention it again.

The best cover letters (from what I have seen and heard about) tend to follow bullet-points. Introduce yourself in terms of the position you are applying for and then hit them with why you're the one for the role. Your body in the letter is decent but restructure it.

In the UK and Europe, cover letters are pretty big so cant comment on the situation in the States.

Trazer,

I like your letter, but it mainly recites your accomplishments, which are probably listed in your CV already.

In my experience, the purpose of the cover letter is to apply for a specific role. Recruiters at major banks do look at the cover letters, and are very good at spotting generic or recycled ones. Answer the following three questions in your cover letter:

  • Why the Company
  • Why the Role
  • Why you

Mention their presentations you've been to, and any recent news about them. If you've networked with them, cite the names of their employees that recommended you to apply.

Finally, this one is clearly a typo: "write use Excel VBA"
