How To Include "Received A Bonus?"
Hey all,
I'm transferring from my non-target public u this fall to the most finance-inclined school in DC. Just completed my first finance internship in asset management this summer and would like to get a better taste of the other "branches", i.e. private/global wealth, private equity, venture capital, i-banking, etc...
Obviously, IB is out of the question given the hours, my availability (15-30 per wk), and certain geographical challenges -- I may just shoot for an internship next summer to get my IB experience. In doing my due diligence for internships this fall I found the Carlyle Group, a huge DC-based PE shop. I know they have a good reputation and PE usually only takes experienced jr bankers, so long question short: do you think they'd take an inexperienced intern working to do grunt stuff for free? Anyone ever have experience getting firms to "create" an intern position for you?
So below is my resume. Lay it on me and give me your haggard wisdom, ye finance sages of olde.

Also, how would one go about including a bonus (small) towards the end of your internship, particularly one which the employer was not obligated to give you? My gut is to just leave off the resume and use it as a talking point, like someone would if he/she got a return offer; Would like to see some more opinions on this though. Thanks
You've got a decent resume going into Jr. year at a school that is well represented on Wall Street. Make sure to keep the GPA up at GTown. Try and find a list of small hedge funds/Ibanks that might take on an intern. I know that Friedman Billings Ramsey is based in Arlington and has a decent MM S&T operation. Cold calling Carlyle probably will not yield many results given their size and formal recruiting process. If you know a partner there it may be a different story.
Hey cats, thanks for the quick response. I was under the impression that FBR became Arlington Asset Management/a REIT. Quick google shows that FBR capital markets got spun off though. I'm assuming they're still based in DC...
There was an employee from my firm this summer who left for Carlyle a couple of months ago and I have his contact info, so he may be able to help. I'm thinking about scouring their website too and just cold-emailing some alums. It's funny that they list all of their investment employees haha
Never under-estimate the power of offering yourself as a FREE resource. A well-written email intro to someone with whom you have something in common or whom you can impress with your credentials or insight could get you the opportunity you want.
Do your research ahead of time to find alums at Carlye or others that you know who have friends at Carlyle.
