Query: Majors, Internships & Club Recruiting

Hello everyone, I'm a 15-year-old rising high school sophomore (male, non-diversity) at an international school in a Middle Eastern country (think Saudi/Qatar/UAE). Passionate about investment (both public & private markets), and currently a VC intern at a pre-seed VC fund based in South Asia. Long-time lurker since Grade 8, but first post :)

Goal is HPYSW -> MF PE (Apollo/BX). Had a couple of questions adjacent to this:

  1. What kind of college freshman/sophomore internships would one need to land SA at MF PE? Is MM/LMM PE SA > BB IB SA for these?
  2. Is there a meaningful benefit to double major in CS & Econ/Finance, like Penn M&T (Other than STEM OPT for internationals) for MF PE recruitment?
  3. What experience in high school would well position one to land the previously mentioned college freshman/sophomore internships & to recruit for college investment clubs (e.g., GPS, WITG at Wharton, Black Diamond at Harvard)?

Thanks for the help!

To position yourself for MF PE (Apollo/BX) and build a strong foundation starting from high school, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. College Freshman/Sophomore Internships for MF PE SA

  • Target Internships:
    • MM/LMM PE Internships: These are highly valuable as they provide direct exposure to private equity, deal processes, and financial modeling. They can be a strong differentiator early on.
    • BB IB SA Internships: These are also excellent, especially if they are in strong groups like M&A or industry-specific teams. However, for MF PE, direct PE experience (even at MM/LMM) might edge out IB experience at this stage.
  • Comparison: MM/LMM PE SA > BB IB SA for MF PE recruitment, especially if you can demonstrate deal experience and technical skills.

2. Double Major in CS & Econ/Finance

  • Advantages:
    • A double major in CS and Econ/Finance can be a significant asset. It signals strong quantitative and analytical skills, which are increasingly valued in PE, especially for firms with a tech focus (e.g., Silver Lake, Vista).
    • Programs like Penn M&T are highly regarded and can open doors to top-tier opportunities.
    • For international students, the STEM OPT extension is a practical benefit, allowing more time to secure sponsorship.
  • Recommendation: If you have the capacity and interest, pursuing this double major can provide a meaningful edge, but it’s not mandatory for MF PE recruitment.

3. High School Experience to Position for College Internships & Investment Clubs

  • Internships:
    • Your current VC internship is already a strong start. Continue seeking internships in finance-related fields, such as boutique investment banks, family offices, or even startups where you can gain exposure to financial modeling or market analysis.
  • Skill Development:
    • Learn financial modeling and valuation techniques early. Resources like WSO’s Financial Modeling Bootcamps can be helpful.
    • Build a strong foundation in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Extracurriculars:
    • Participate in finance-related competitions (e.g., stock pitch competitions, investment challenges).
    • Take leadership roles in school clubs related to business, economics, or investing.
  • College Investment Clubs:
    • Clubs like GPS, WITG, and Black Diamond are highly competitive. To stand out:
      • Highlight your VC internship and any tangible results (e.g., deals sourced, market research conducted).
      • Showcase technical skills (e.g., financial modeling, coding if applicable).
      • Demonstrate a genuine passion for investing through personal projects (e.g., managing a mock portfolio, writing investment theses).

Final Tips:

  • Networking: Start building relationships early. Reach out to alumni from your school or region who are in finance.
  • Academics: Maintain top grades, especially in quantitative subjects, to strengthen your HPYSW application.
  • Preparation: Use resources like WSO’s Private Equity Interview Prep to get ahead on technical and behavioral questions.

By staying proactive and focused, you’re already on a great path to achieving your goals!

Great questions man; you’re definitely on the right track!

A mentor of mine once told me not to worry about the specific path as much as my role, dedication, and achievements in the endeavor itself. I wouldn’t stress the school as many have good pipelines and if you’re smart, passionate, and involved, you’ll do fantastic recruiting for that dream role out of undergrad which will likely change over the course of the next 5 years. The best thing you can do right now is to learn from your network and get a perfect SAT/ACT score. Get a girl friend too and live a little!
