Sophomore Resume, Seeking Advice & Insight

Hello all,

I'm currently a student looking to break into banking. I've been reading up on m&I on my spare time and talking to the forum members. One of them suggested that I put this resume for forum review.

I would appreciate any and all insight/constructive criticism on how I can improve. Please let me know..

A question:

1) How can I state better the interests/activities on the bottom?
2) I am still a freshman so that is why I left AP scores and SAT scores in there. What do you guys think?

Thanks all

As a fellow college student I have only one thing to say. Damn.

That's really impressive. Only comments are that the activities under "Dartmouth College" could be made into their own separate headings--you instruct speed mental math but that's not in the same capacity as the LBO analysis (it follows strangely).

Also, I would cut the APs unless the job/application asks specifically. Most Ivies like to see 4-5 on AP, so I think you're good with just showing that you go to Dartmouth and that you have great SAT scores. Also condense some of the coursework into "relevant coursework" for the field you're applying to. My eyes kind of slide over it right now instead of understanding what you've done.

As others will tell you, make sure you know what's on your resume. Be prepared to talk about SETT in taiwanese and code something on the spot. If I were screening resumes, I would notice yours, but I would also notice the fact that you're a freshman and wonder if you just put a bunch of stuff on there that sounded cool but you aren't prepared to talk about in detail.

include an anticipated or expected graduation date for your undergrad. pretty important if you want recruiters to know you're a freshman

a) A lot of younger kids list testing on their resume since they're barely into their college tenure. That being said, it's a bit much to see every single standardized test you've ever taken written out to great detail. You're doing a tremendous job with formatting and white space so that isn't the issue, but it's almost a given that with 99th percentile SAT reasoning/subject scores, you're going to have done well on APs, especially if you're at an Ivy. Consider just knocking out the AP section or simplifying to one line, i.e. "Advanced Placement: 5 - Calculus BC, AB, Bio...etc."

b) Why is there "1 Of 1" in the corner? Is that something the site put on it? Use razume.com, it's considered the standard.

c) Nitpicking, but justify the locations on each of your entries to the right-hand tab you have the horizontal lines extending to, it'll look better and help separate the location and date from the text in your bullet points.

d) You stand out in a ton of ways, but some of your interests seem a bit cliche. i.e. Poker/whatever-card-game, trading, and any sort of finance-related interest is exceptionally overused. Everyone lists them thinking it'll make them look like a finance monster on their apps. Relax, you already look beast enough with your scores and coursework and experience and everything else. Your interests are where your individuality is supposed to shine through, where what makes you you comes across. You have a bit of that, but several are cliche.

Tremendous so far though.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.
