Using a set layout/format for a CV?
Ive noticed on a few sites that many people tend to have the same format for their CV's. The majority use the format given on M&I.
Im going to start applying for positions next year and was wandering if I should use one of those formats or my own? Could it affect my chances if someone realizes i used the format from M&I and so on?
Would it be beneficial or actually gurt me if i make my own format?
Thanks for the help guy.
These formats are ok. You are applying to a conservative industry so no colors or "creative" looking CV's. Just keep it well structured and neat looking. M&I is a good place to start, bare in mind that you're never really done writing a CV, you polish it over the years...
No, the formats will not hurt you. In finance, especially banking you just want to look crisp, clean, and neat. Use M&I's template as a guide and work on it.
Your university may have templates as well. If so, use them.
M&I or something similar is fine. When I read resumes, things that are drastically different from that tend to be viewed negatively.
is the above true? i feel like my resume is cleaner and easier on the eyes than the M&I format, especially since it uses NOT times new roman which is much harder to read than say arial when looking at it on a computer screen.
is using arial and a different format - though easier on the eyes - looked down upon?
I've never been hurt by using the M&I format. Heck, an interviewer (approvingly) asked me if I got it from M&I.
I dunno about the font so much...
I think it is the content that takes priority over design. Keeping it simple, clean and organized with no typos and grammatical errors would be my advice.
