Any Info on CMBW at IU Kelley?
I'm a prospective Kelley student. I'm sure everybody has heard of the IBW at Kelley.
Apparently 2-3 years ago, they made a workshop called "Capital Markets and Banking Workshop" (CMBW). I've heard those who don't get into the IBW end up in the CMBW.
On the website, it says they place people into careers like LevFin, ECM, and DCM. It also says they work directly with Goldman Sachs and some other BB, but I don't wanna place too much emphasis on just the website.
Does anyone know what placements are like for the CMBW? Also, any tips on how to get in to the workshop?
A big part of both IBW and CMBW is networking. Working in the financial services industry heavily revolves around networking so the directors ensure you are prepared. Begin the habit of reading the WSJ every day and stay up to date on the markets. Once you get back on campus begin to meet people in the workshops. One way to get ahead is beginning to understand valuation analyses before you learn them in the F355 course.
Typically, the CMBW is easier to get into with a minimum requirement of a 3.4 GPA compared to the IBW minimum of 3.6. However, those numbers are misleading because both workshops median GPA is much high. The IBW only accepts 65 people per year moving forward and I am unsure of the numbers for CMBW (believe it was 30-40). The reason they cap off the number of members is they want to increase the competitiveness of the program as well ensure they receive full-time offers. IBW members tend to go all over from BB to EB to MM, but the vast majority end up with offers, CMBW members have been recruiting into IB intern positions as well this year.
What do you think is the median gpa for CMBW? I heard for IBW it's a 3.9.
I don’t believe it’s that much lower because it’s still quite competitive...my best guess would be between 3.75-3.85
Posted this response on a different thread, but I thought it would benefit people to re-share it here:
Great question! I am a member in the current CMBW class. We are a younger workshop, but have made incredible progress in regards to Wall Street placement. Personally, I recruited for a mix of M&A and LevFin positions. I will be interning at Houlihan Lokey for Corporate Finance, and I received interview offers at Moelis and BofA.
If you don't know what type of position you'd like at an investment bank (ie. most students), the CMBW provides you with solid optionality. All Kelley workshops are super strong and more than adequately prepare you for a future in finance.
