At a crossroads, 4 years in military, considering MBA

I'm 27 and have been in the army for a little over 4 years as an officer. I just returned from 9 months in Korea and will be promoted to captain in a few weeks. For years I've considered an MBA, I've been studying for the GMAT for a long time, and I plan to take it within the next 2 weeks.

I had a lot of time to think about where my life was headed and what I wanted to do while I was in Korea, and I concluded that 1. The army is easy money but I don't have any interest left for it, so either I'll quit or eventually be forced out due to poor performance (I would have around 2 years before then if it happened); 2. getting an MBA is the most practical/safest option if I don't stay in the army and at my current age of 27, I'm in the sweet spot to apply, and 3. what I REALLY want to do is start my own online business and move abroad to a low cost of living country (I calculated I would need $85/day to live comfortably).

I've been going back and forth on the idea of an MBA for a long time, but when I read the daily schedules of students in various b school blogs, it just sounded miserable to me, and I have little to no interest in finance or consulting which are the 2 biggest employers.

If I don’t go to b school, my plan was to start working on a business while I’m still in the army, and see where it is 2 years from now, when I’m 29. If I’m making enough money from it, great and I’ll get out and run it full time. If not, then I’ll get an mba – which would mean I would apply around age 30 and matriculate age 31 at the oldest. The consensus here seems to be that 31 is not too old to get an mba and a job afterwards for a military applicant, is this correct?

I just want to give myself a chance to succeed with my true interest (running my own business) even though it’s a low percentage play before having all my time and energy sucked up by an mba program. In the army, I have significant free time to pursue side projects. I also don’t think I need to get an mba to be an entrepreneur. If I went, it would be solely to find an income source outside the military and develop some marketable skills, which I feel I currently lack (I’m a military intelligence officer with liberal arts college degrees).

On the other hand, I’m facing a lot of family and social pressure to get an MBA now, and I don’t want to get to age 30 no better off than I am now professionally, just older.

I’d appreciate anyone’s input on my situation and thank you for reading.
