BB Analysts take it away: don't hold back but be sincere...how do MBA Summer Associates earn respect?

We all know the stereotypes about MBA Summer Associates from the finmeme scene...no need to repeat. Granted it was all fun until I became one: headed to a BB for the summer in NYC.

I was an investment analyst myself before my MBA...finished my CFA charter which should help earn cred but still. My banking experience pre-MBA is on other continents, and we all know Street analysts are top notch.

What will it take in your view?

Definitely spend the first 6 months getting very good at the technical parts of the job and don’t be afraid to ask analysts for help or defer to them on some things. As others have said, you really need to understand the work so you can check it and aren’t embarrassed by silly errors you missed.

After 6 months or so though you really need to focus on being a more senior banker, delegating work, managing teams, etc. and need to get more out of the weeds. At this point you should be staffed with more first year analysts, so will feel like a more natural hierarchy. Ultimately your job is to know the numbers but not to generate them.

6 months? Nah fam, chill. MBAs need to be humble for at least a year before they can even think about trying to manage others.
