Brigham Young University help!

Do the people that break into EB or BB IB major in finance at BYU? I know their accountant program is top 3 in the country, but I'm not too sure if the people that break into these banking major in accounting or finance.

Also, how easy is it to network and guarantee a spot at a MM IB at Brigham Young?

I can't seem to find any hard numbers on the people interested in banking, the number that actually gets in, typical BYU undergraduate GPAs for banking, etc.

Thanks!

BYU typically places 25-35 in banking every year, typically at BB/EB with some MM too. Nearly all who place do finance out of undergrad. Biggest benefit of BYU is a strong alumni network which helps us place consistently despite being a pretty justified non-target school. Feel free to PM for more details

BYU is extremely social, just not alcohol-centric like most universities. Despite being mostly “dry”, people still have a ton of fun. Speaking from my experience, college was the most fun time of my life so far. I guess it’s all relative but I had a blast. And I’ve done the whole party scene, getting drunk every weekend, etc. and I’m here to tell you that BYU doesn’t keep you from having an outstanding social experience in college. And ultimately, if you really want to party, there are always students who do it.

BYU grad here. The platform that BYU provides is actually quite incredible. You can go to nearly any reputable bank from BYU while paying peanuts for tuition. The alumni network is super strong and will help you get your foot in the door.

I’ll go through some of the major banks with placement details.

Credit Suisse: For years this has been the most solidified pipeline into IB from BYU, sending offers to around 5 kids each year. People hate on CS these days, but historically it has been an awesome opportunity. The strong pipeline was predominantly due to Eric Varvel (former top exec who left the bank this spring) and some other high-ranking seniors. Placement has been mostly between the NY and LA offices. Will be interesting to see if the pipeline remains strong with Varvel gone.

Lazard: Another very strong pipeline, generally seeing 3-5 BYU placements per cycle across offices. They come to BYU each year and do a big presentation with all the BYU bankers from the firm. Tracy Farr is probably the most notable senior.

GS: Probably tied with Lazard for second strongest pipeline (maybe even stronger). Generally BYU sends 3-5 per cycle to GS. And we’re talking top groups like Tech, Industrials, etc.

The above three banks are most definitely the strongest pipelines from BYU.

BofA: Probably comes in 4th with 2-3 coming from BYU each year. Seems to mostly be for the Palo Alto office but there may be some NY placements as well.

JPM: BYU used to have a pipeline into JPM but ever since 2018/2019 they really tightened up their hiring practices to discourage network hiring—made it so most hiring was through standard application processes. Nevertheless, 1-2 BYU kids will place here each year—seems to be mostly in the healthcare group.

Rothschild: On the up and up for BYU placements. An MD, VP, and some associates are building a pipeline. Expect more placements to come from BYU with time.

Those are the main avenues into IB from BYU. That said, the other half of placements each year go to many other banks. Places like Jefferies, Houlihan, William Blair, Citi, Evercore, Qatalyst, and more.

Banks BYU usually doesn’t typically place at: Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Centerview and a handful of others. That said, it’s definitely not off the table to get into one of these. The BYU brand is strong across the street and will be very helpful when it comes to recruiting.

Disclaimer: this was all off the top of my head at 1am after turning comments all day so I may have forgotten some banks/ pipelines. Regardless, hope this helps.
