Canadian MBA thread
Any Canadians here starting their MBA in 2011
I applied to
Queens - Accepted 10k scholarship
Rotman - Accepted
Schulich - Accepted 5K scholarship
Ivey - dinged after video conference interview , should have flown in :(
I ended up picking Schulich
Why schulich over queens? I understand the MBA programs are perceived differently from the undergrad ones?
Queens has had poor ibanking placement in recent years, they had 1 last year (this is based on OCR others may have landed roles later on) and one or two the year before. They place a bunch of people into the banking leadership rotational roles or credit roles as compared to S&T and IBD.
Also, their OCR is pretty weak as some of the major canadian banks dont actually recruit on campus, but rather just put up postings (ie. BMO), and while students do get called for interviews (BMO hired one person for IBD last year) I preferred a school that had better OCR.
Queens is very highly ranked because the students love the program, which is awesome and I can say that everyone there is very friendly and the campus is amazing, but when you look closer at the businesweek stats and you speak with people at the school the MBA program is not that well geared to investment banking, and without an internship period, i thought that I might be taking a risk in getting placement after the program.
Thats just my opinion based on my situation, i am sure that others feel differently and the program was great for them.
That's interesting, I didn't know Queen's MBA was that... mediocre.
Schulich has a great masters program, congrats!
I STRONGLY doubt that Queens MBA program placed ONE graduate into IBD, that is nonsense. I actually think Rotman is a better program than either but nevertheless that statement is categorically misleading.
Im not sure if you are in the program or were in recent years and can provide some more details, but i have spent a day at the school, spoke a number of times with current students, and with the career centre. As of March the only IBD offer extended to a student graduating in 2011 was from BMO. There were 3 students who got roles as of January at the major banks but in rotational roles. This obviously could have changed over the last month or so.
I was told that a number of students did get interviews for S&T and IBD but no offers, the students at Queens MBA advise that they dont have to take many Finance courses early in the program, and thus are not as well prepared as students from Ivey (the other one year program) and of course second year students from Rotman or Schulich.
When i was at Queens of the students I spoke with not a lot of them actually mentioned that they wanted to go into ibanking or s&t, compared with the students i spoke with at Rotman for example. Most students at Queens wanted to go into consulting or marketing etc. The career centre there is really good and the students say that they can get you the placement if you want, but if you do a search on linked in, the queens mba alumni group doesnt have a lot of bankers.

So then, Ivey/Rotman/Schulich in terms of good Canadian MBAs?
for IB yes.
This thread is full of nonsense. I've personally met two people from the Queen's MBA class of 2011 who got into BB IBD and S&T as associates (TD Securities Investment Banking and CIBC World Markets Institutional Equity Trading). And those are the only two guys that I decided to reach out to. You can probably easily find them via linkedin.
As I previously mentioned I was talking about as of February, its entirely possible that others have been made offers or accepted offers after that.
As far as Schulich, yes I think the overload of indian engineers is a little extreme, and I doubt that the class profile is as strong as it is at some of the other schools, but it is also larger than any other MBA program in Canada and Im sure there are a large number of equally strong candidates in the program.
I think you wen to Queens right, mba or undergrad
Nah, I just completed my senior year in high school and I'm about to attend the prestigious UOIT this fall to pursue a B.A in Animal Psychology.
Keep hearing the terms "target" and "semi-target" around these forums, but almost always referring to U.S. universities...
Are Ivey, Rotman and Schulich considered "target" grad schools for IB? Or are they "semi-target" because Canadian MBAs are altogether considered on a different level than U.S. top 10?
Yeah, Canadian MBAs aren't regarded as US MBAs are. Poets&Quants did an article on the top b-schools outside the US - poetsandquants.com/2010/12/14/poetsquants-top-50-mba-programs-outside-the-u-s/
Queen's was pretty low due to the ONE rankings they were in. Go through the comments, they're pretty interesting.
Regardless of that, you can tell just by looking at the list. Schulich top 10 in the world? McGill 15? holy shit lol
I find it amusing that at least 30% of Schulich's MBA class comprises of non-target engineering grads from India.
def Rotman for MBA
Yeah Queen's MBA is not as strong as their Commerce program, Ivey and Rotman are very well respected and more recently so is McGill... for some reason their MBA program had the highest avg. salary coming out in Canada. Schulich is great too, they definitely have a stronger MBA program than their undergrad, they were placed #1 in Canada by The Economist, Forbes and WSJ and although I'm not to reliant on rankings, being number one on those rankings show that they must be doing something right.
I think you made a great decision, but Rotman would've been the slightly better choice. Good luck.
Thanks for adding some valuable insight regarding top Canadian MBA programs, fellow highschooler... How was your prom?
I would be able to give you a more interesting answer if you asked about the after party.
