Copenhagen Business school vs Warwick Business school vs Bayes Business school
I have received offers from all 3 schools. The MSc Finance at Bayes (although could consider corporate finance or Banking and International Finance), MSc Finance and Investments at CBS, and finally Finance and Economics at Warwick. I am considering all 3 courses but having a hard time deciding. I want to work within the financial sector either in London or in Scandinavia. Any recommendations?
I would go with CBS, no doubt. Better to be at the top school in Denmark (top for Scandi alongside SSE), than third rate programmes in the UK. Warwick is pretty good for undergrad but like UCL has gotten barely any traction for their MSc students. Besides, I reckon it is not their flagship course.
Bayes / Cass is more than a notch below in reputation and perceived as a bit of a magnet for tryhards.
Ok thanks. I saw Warwick does have very good IB placement but is probably most for the MSc in Finance students. Just thinking that the economics department at Warwick is really good and highly regarded (as is their finance department). So I feel having both of them helps and looks good on my CV.
I agree that Bayes might be slightly lower perceived in the UK, as there are a lot of try-hard foreign students, but it is viewed quite well in the Scandinavian countries. The entry requirements are also stricter and more difficult for Bayes than the two others.
Is there any specific reason Bayes has a bad rep in the UK?
Even Warwick's MSc Finance is very mid at best.
Postgrad is not super common for Brits and the ones that do it would need to see a significant jump in prestige from their undergrad to make it worthwhile.
That's why imo everyone with a decent profile aims for Oxbridge, LBS, LSE or Imperial. Therefore UCL/Warwick get the folks who really bank on the undergrad brand with very limited success.
Nothing against Bayes. Anecdotally their students are very eager/driven. But everyone knows it is rarely someone's first choice and ends up attracting a crowd of people who don't quite hit the mark but are determined to break into banking come hell or high water.
Happy to provide input as I am from Scandinavia and have studied at one of the aforementioned schools.
Firstly, do you have experience in banking? I.e., have you done multiple internships in the past? What is your undergraduate school? Reason for why I am asking if you have experience and go to Warwick you will more or less get interview everywhere (I am talking about top 3 BB and the Mega Funds), if you don't have experience you might struggle with recruitment if you are not prepared. Likewise, did you do your BSc in CBS, if you did the MSc in the same school might not be accretive, whilst gaining international experience is a plus.
Look, if you want to recruit in London, and goal is to work in London, then Warwick is the best school out of the options. If you are not prepared, CBS can be a good option to gain experience (do some part-time banking / pe internship to build up CV).
Let me know if you have any questions.
Managed to answer as an own comment so not sure if you got a notification or not
Sorry to hijack, but can I PM you? I'm a Scandi at a BB in London looking to return to the Nordics relatively soon for buy-side, but I'm struggling to find information about how recruiting works in the region
Hi and thanks for your response,
I was not a very eager student through High school and was unsure what I wanted to do. I began my BSc at BI Norwegian Business School and really found a lot of motivation there. So I decided I wanted to work myself to a better MSc ta achieve the careers goals I have set out for myself. I have good grades but not exceptional, so some of the schools above are out of my reach. I know IB roles (and similar) are most likely out of my reach currently. Still, I have worked my way up from where I was and want to continue to do so. Therefore I believe the MSc choice I make is vital.
My experience is limited to 2 summer internships (one in an Asset Management firm and one in a fund of funds PE firm). The asset management firm is a mid sized company in Oslo and the other is a extremely small team also in Oslo.
What are your thoughts on Bayes? I know many Norwegian have gone there and recruited well in attractive Norwegian companies, but people from the UK all seem so negative towards the school. Can I ask which school you attended?
I went to Warwick. Your experience is good enough to land internships in London or in the Nordics.
I would personally not go to Bayes, its semi target and know a lot of people who struggle with recruitment. Both Warwick and CBS are a tier above.
Ok that is good to know. Thanks!
I think Bayes is not as attractive anymore. I have been a little blinded by the wish of returning to London and perhaps put that in front of more important things. Still, I think I would prefer CBS to Warwick as I was admitted to their Finance and Economics degree and not the flagship MSc Finance. Do you think the possibility of a good job in London in attainable through CBS or would Warwick (even the finance and economics MSc) be better for achieving that goal?
I think you should aim for a better MSc, like Oxbridge, LSE or Imperial
That is unfortunately not attainable.
