Fired 2 months ago
My profile:
- Age: 30
- Undergrad: Known non-target (technical campus of a target but separate)
- Background: 6 years in corporate development, good deal experience
The issue, so I was fired early spring this year, it was not performance related, basically my VP left our group for a different company. The director above me felt insecure about me because this VP trusted me a lot and let me run deals outside the supervision of this director. The moment the VP left, I was fired for "not performance" related reasons by this director. The VP called me the next day and felt incredibly guilty and apologized for what happened and promised to provide any letters of rec for future employment/school.
The last year I was there, I was constantly trying to network my way either into a PE role (for the industry I have deal experience in) or just a general lower middle market IB. On the side I was also studying for the gmat but not really full blown because of my age/prestige of experience.
Fast forward, the economy in terms of banking/pe is going into the shitter and I am getting older, so my chances of getting into a firm at this point at pretty small without an act of God. Now add into the mix, I got fired from my last job which apparently is a big no no for top MBA programs... am I fucked basically?
bump
You’re never f*cked. It’s just a very tough market right now, with so many good people being laid off.
I have never heard being let go, especially if not performance related, was a red flag for top mba programs? Who told you that? I sometimes interview for my alma matters, and I never penalize anyone for being laid off. Are you getting any traction in Corp dev roles? Or are you solely focusing on PE?
Surrounding your firing, was there no one else you could ask in the company? The VP left, so you were down a man, and they still fired you? They said it was no performance related and you made it seem like it was a vendetta against you. Was just curious why there was no one else in the team or company that could have helped worked something out.
Yes but you can say you were laid off and not fired. There’s a big difference. And your VP letter will back you up.
I understand your fear of taking a corp dev job next and make yourself even more unattractive for PE. But sometimes life throws your curveballs man. I wanted PE too, but half assed the recruiting cause I was arrogant and now just accept that dream is gone. It sucks but you can’t always get what you want. That being said, mba to PE is possible. I’ve seen it happen.
Finally, that is a really unfortunate outcome for you. I’m shocked the VP didn’t have more power to keep your job safe after he left. And I’m shocked the manager in between you did so much to screw you. I have no idea of labor law, but I wonder if you have put up a fight or threatened to get a lawyer involved, they would have topped up your severance package.
alma "matters" hahahaha dude I loled.
Hiring decision makers tend to be older. And older people all know a thing that younger people do not: great people get fired all the time. Not sometimes . . all the time.
By the time you’re mid thirties, you know many great people in your orbit (friends, family etc) who got fired do to circumstances totally out of their control. You also know many great people who had one or two weaknesses, got fired because of it, and grew into excellent performers.
So trust me, the stigma of having been fired is not nearly as big as you make it out to be. Sure, they’all want to know why. But just tell them what happened and tell them your most direct report (the VP) liked you and is ready to vouch for you. The issue will go from small to tiny.
