gay asian male going to target school

Hey everyone, so I am a gay asian male going to a target school this fall. It is a complicated thing for me to say or come out about openly, so I am hesitant on using it for recruiting. I know some banks have specific lgbtq programs you can apply through, so I was wondering if it was worth doing them and how much it will actually help me during IB recruiting.

Also, if anyone else of LGBTQ has any of their own experiences or lgbtq programs they would like to share please let me know. Thanks!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights:

  1. LGBTQ Programs in Banks:

    • Many banks have specific LGBTQ programs and summits designed to support diversity and inclusion. These programs can provide valuable networking opportunities and potentially lead to internships.
    • However, it's important to be genuine about your identity. Posing as something you're not can have serious repercussions, including being blacklisted from the bank or facing severe consequences if discovered.
  2. Personal Experiences:

    • One user, "youngqueeb," mentioned that while they respect the hustle, they strongly advise against pretending to be something you're not. The benefits of a one-day summit or some networking opportunities do not outweigh the risks of being dishonest about your identity.
  3. Networking and Support:

    • Participating in LGBTQ programs can help you connect with other LGBTQ professionals in the industry, providing a support network and potentially opening doors for future opportunities.
    • It's also a chance to engage with mentors who have navigated similar challenges and can offer guidance and advice.
  4. Authenticity:

    • Being authentic about your identity is crucial. The finance industry values integrity, and being true to yourself will help you build genuine relationships and a trustworthy reputation.

Yes they help but I can only speak for buyside recruiting as I did not go through a program for IB. Interviews can be a bit lighter and you may have some exclusive networking opportunities. Your orientation will not be explicitly disclosed to your co-workers. People may assume if you attend lgbtq focused events, but i do not believe HR can legally disclose that information to others working at the firm(besides those that need to know)

What are some examples of buyside places that offer lgbtq programs? In the same boat here

TPG is big on it. They generally lump it in with DE&I, but they hold exclusivly diversity networking events prior to on-cycle. Basically all the MF have some sort of program or events.

My advice is go to these programs and networking events for LGBTQ but don’t make it your whole personality. Remember that although they have these programs it’s still a very male dominated and sometimes very fratty industry. Take the opportunities to network but know your audience.

It prob helps. I personally never acc met an explicitly lgbt individual throughout any of my internships. These individuals are still well within the closet in the pits even if they go through the lgbt programs
