GMAT Quant Wall

I'm planning on taking the GMAT soon but am stalling on the quant side. I'm aiming to score in the 49-51 range but am shy of that.

Does anyone recommend specific resources and practice methods to make the final push?

I assume you are taking the classic before it expires on the 31st? If so, just keep in mind that you may have to retake but with the focus edition.

At that level, the GMAT is less about conceptual understanding and more about strategy. Past the Quant 40 mark, you know the content well enough to score decently well, you just need to be effective during the test. This means knowing when to bail on a question, knowing when to backsolve/choose numbers v.s. taking the standard algebra approach etc.

Also remember that it is not a game of solving the hardest questions possible - you should aim to get 100% of all Medium level (so from 650 to 700 tagged questions on GMATClub) correct, as those will be by far the most common answer type you will get. The GMAT Classic heavily punishes wrong answer streaks, so it is imperative that you are able to do all medium level questions with perfect accuracy if you are aiming for a top score.

Do also note that business schools care more about the overall profile, and would admit a Q45-47 with a good profile vs a Q49-51 with a much less stellar profile, provided that both GMAT scores are the same.

If you are unable to reach your GMAT score, you could consider the GRE - the correlation between both tests is roughly 0.9, so you should be able to smash the quant section and be within reach (or even well above average) for whatever programme you are targeting.

That’s really good to know about the streaks and how to approach the test. Agree, might just pivot to GRE instead of slamming my head against the wall.

I'm currently studying for the GRE and use Target Test Prep and like it a lot. They have GMAT training as well.

I’d highly recommend target Test prep, loved them a ton. My highest quant score after using them was 49. Highest practice scores was 50.

However, you don’t need a 49+ for m7 or even HSW. I got into Stanford and Wharton with a 47q (had odd split with the 49q score, so submitted a higher 760 with a lower quant score)

Remember, always be kind-hearted.
