Help! University of Bristol Economics for IB in London

I am international student from India who has got an offer to read economics at university of Bristol. Bristol as far as i have heard has a great Economics course and they do have a good career service ( i guess ). I am kinda worried about my future prospects at an Investment Bank in LDN(IBD and S&T)/HK ( S&T ). How should i prepare myself to network and how should I prepare to land into a Summer/Spring internship from the first,

Undergraduate or graduate? Anyway, Bristol's reputation in the UK is weak, good luck competing with Warwick, Bath, LSE, UCL, Oxbridge. If you have to guess about the careers center, then it's probably not good enough to push you into IB. Networking wise, be prepared to travel to London, as on-campus events would be scarce (and useless).

You can prepare yourself to IB by applying to a better university. Admissions to the UK universities (ex Oxbridge) are easier than the U.S. Take your chances and apply to Warwick at least.

What did you get in A-S Level and what are the A-Levels and the predicted grades? If you are set on going to Bristol, make the best of your first semester and try hard to transfer up. If you are an international student, then almost £16,000 a year for three years is not worth it at Bristol. Drop me a message if you want.

Have a look at this: http://news.efinancialcareers.com/uk-en/274288/summer-interns-goldman-s…

Bristol doesn't fall into the target universities for IB's. (Oxbridge, LSE, Warwick and UCL)

But, it's still a very good university, particularly for Economics. Forget about the careers service, they won't be of much use. Do you research about banking before you get to university. Understand what division you're applying for and what they do. Practice numerical and other online tests. And apply early.

I met a guy studying History at Bristol during a first-round interview for a full-time position for Rothschild M&A. And I personally know a guy that studied Economics at Bristol, that's starting full time at a BB.

If you don't get any better offers, take Bristol. You'll be at a slight disadvantage, but IB's DO look at semi-targets. You'll have to do what you can to stand out though.

I have researched about investment banking and which role i wanna end up in. I am trying to groom myself from the beginning of my uni life to be a perfect fit for investment banking. BTW is it possible to transfer to other targets like LSE/UCL provided i get high scores for all the modules and i have a strong reason as well as the letter from professor?

Don't groom yourself to try and be a perfect fit for investment banking.

  1. That's weird. 2. There's no such thing as a perfect fit.

I'm not entirely sure how transferring works, so don't take my knowledge on it as definite. I'm sure it is possible, but it seems unlikely. From what I know, the courses at LSE/UCL are far more difficult (mathematically) than Bristol. Even if you do very well in your first year, it'd still be a hard sell to show you're capable to handle their second year course. What you could potentially do, is do really well in your first year at Bristol, and transfer to LSE/Warwick/UCL, but you may have to begin again as a first year. A friend of mine moved from Warwick to Bristol, and she had to start all over again.

Is it worth giving up a year to slightly improve your chances of getting into IB? That's for you to decide. And stop trying to be this perfect fit for banking. Work hard, be sharp and smart when it comes to interviews, and please don't neglect your social life/extra-curricular. If you try to be this 'perfect banker', you'll come across as boring during their interviews and you won't get very far.
