How realistic is this?
Hey peeps,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been working as a capital raiser at a boutique PE shop for a little over a yr now. I'm doing well and have surpassed expectations, received a promotion, etc. Graduated UG 2 years ago and have started to think about an MBA. The reason for the consideration is that I'm not sure Partnership is attainable at my current firm (nor do I want to wait 4+ yrs to find out), and if it isnt, I don't have many options besides lateral movements to other boutiques or, God Forbid, financial advisory. I do want to break into IB (mainly capital markets) and see an MBA as a tool to get there at my 4/5 yr mark post-UG. Goal of hopefully working with emerging markets as I speak several languages (Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and English) and am most passionate about that field, but not a necessity.
Brief stats: 3.1 gpa (death of immediate family member) from a non target school, several leadership / founder roles during UG, extensive volunteering with underprivileged middle and high school students, languages, am an immigrant, upward career trajectory, etc.
If I were to get accepted into a top 10-20 ranked school, how realistic is my goal?
Hi Scotch,
Sorry for your loss.
Was there any trend to the GPA? Was there a time during college when your family member was healthy, or your weren't grieving and your grades were significantly higher?

HI Scotch,
Thanks for the additional info.
If you get a strong GMAT/GRE, you do have a shot in that range of programs (and maybe higher). Your career progression looks solid. There were extenuating circumstances (that you should tell them about) that lowered your GPA. You seem to have had impressive extra-curriculars and they will be impressed with the hardships you've overcome as well as your multi-lingual ability.
In terms of your ability to get the job you're looking for, I'll ask one of Accepted's consutlants to weigh in on that. She's the former director of career management at Cornell Johnson.
Best, Linda
I would appreciate that. Thank you. .
Hi Scotch,
Here's what https://www.accepted.com/aboutus/karinash</a">Dr. Karin Ash wrote me when I asked her to review our exchange:
"You need to prove your academic capabilities by taking and acing some finance/accounting courses at a nearby university or online. You also need to earn a high GMAT score. Otherwise, you have the right stuff."
Best, Linda
