Is Michigan State good enough for wall street?

Looking towards applying to Ross business school and Eli Broad Business School. If Ross doesn't workout should i apply to different schools out of state Michigan or Would Michigan State be good enough, MSU's business school homepage does show a student who accepted a job at Black-rock so it does seem good enough but looking for opinions as well.

Know a guy who went to MSU. There are ~7-10 students (out of 9000 class size) who get jobs in high finance every year from MSU. It is definitely possible, but it definitely requires more work. That said, if you're hungry, networking to get yourself into the interview room builds character. Also, girls are much hotter than Umich... might be worth it.

All else being equal going to a school which is higher ranked is better. That being said, most universities will have specialized organizations and professors which keep up professional networks and help top students place into whatever fields they are interested.

For example, a quick search for "MSU" and "Investment Banking" leads you here: http://finance.broad.msu.edu/fmi/

Which is basically an organization that focuses on helping top students place into high-finance jobs. Although from the looks of it it might be for undergraduate students only and probably isn't a cakewalk to get into.

Nothing is a given, and you will have to work for it.

If this is for an MBA, got to UMich.

personally know a few kids that went to MSU and now work at Barclays. I think that is the only known bank i've seen them at...will be easier to get mm/boutique gigs in the michigan area...maybe chicago through networking but can't say about the rest.

Know kids from MSU. From talking to them, very few kids at the school want, or even know, what IB, etc. are, so you aren't exactly competing against 9,000 as one poster said. However, it is still highly competitive to get into the FMI group. FMI Kids have been successful at getting jobs at pretty much every big bank in both Chicago and NYC. I personally know of people who have gone from MSU to GS, MS, BAML, Barclays, etc.

the quality of career services and faculty is quite different.

I remember MSU broad advertising one of their UG Seniors getting into Wall Street on their Linkedin/Facebook... is that really like that big of a deal?!

Cornell is a "very challenging" school?

It will be very tough as I don't know many guys from MSU that get into BBs. However, I knew a few guys that did work in S&T @ GS in Chicago, so it's not impossible. You just need to utilize your alumni network. There have to be people from MSU at BBs.

Just because they don't recruit doesn't mean it is impossible. It depends on how badly you want it.

Yup, FMI program has good rankings, one of the members is actually doing an internship at one of the IBs this summer. If it's too late for you to get into FMI, lean on your networking

Should have gotten into Ross
