Job out of UG as international?
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of studying undegrad in the US. Living abroad and getting international experience are some of the reasons I'm considering this, but the possibility of coming to work in the NY offices of a BB after college is also a huge factor.
Coming out of undergrad at a target/semi-target school thinking of applying to Williams, Duke, Amherst, UVA and other institutions on this tier), with the standard 3.7+ GPA and relevant internships, would I be at a disadvantage versus national applicants? Would the Visa process deter firms from hiring me, and would I be better of starting in my home country or in Europe, then trying to make the move post MBA or through promotions? I'm from Portugal, and also got accepted here at Nova for entry in September this year.
What are you planning on studying? Makes a difference when it comes to how long you can easily stay in the US after graduation.
Regardless, if you're coming from something like Duke and you have a 3.7+ GPA as you mentioned you should be fine - it won't be as easy as it would be for a domestic student, because some firms either prefer not to sponsor internationals or judge you more harshly, but if you really want to work here I recommend coming down now. Worst case scenario you get sent back after graduation, but that tends to be to similar jobs in London so you're still doing well, with a preferred option to transfer back here if your Visa pans out.
That sounds pretty good. Would love London as well. I was thinking of majoring in Econ or Business, so I believe I can stay 12 months. After this time period, however, I've heard it is pretty difficult to get a H1B because of off-shoring firms.
I said Duke because I'm thinking of applying there, but I' not sure to get in. UVA or U Michigan are more certain, would these still allow for recruiting chances?
BBs dont really care about h1b issue because if it doesnt work out they just ransfer you to london or sth

My advice would be to double major in econ/fin and some STEM subject. (Math or statistics would be amazing generally if you could do that)
with STEM subjects you get almost 2.5-3yr OPT allowing you wto work where with others you get 12 months OPT
You apply for h1b in this OPT period
so the longer opt period with STEM allows you to have multiple tries at h1b

I can only apply for Fall 2017 in the States, whereas I could start this September in Portugal and it takes 3 years here to graduate as opposed to four. So, to be sure, you're saying getting my degree in the US would be worth only starting my career at 23 instead of 21? I suppose I could also get to London out of my Portuguese uni if I managed to be a superstar there; I'm just not sure if I could get IBD. Sorry for my indecisiveness, but this is a pretty big decision for me; as much as I would love to get work in NY, I also worry about this two years I would lose.
Hello, Studying abroad is a great experience.
If you are planning to stay in USA, it will be great to apply to top 20 schools because they have international recognition and credibility which enable you to find the job you are aiming for.
Also, We would recommend schools that are not in rural areas because it will be harder to network.
