London BB Associate to STEM/Humanities MSc

Hi everyone,

I'm an Investment Banking Associate at a top BB in London covering Energy & Infrastructure. I graduated from a tier 2 European business school (IE, RSM, ESCP) 3 years ago and would like to take a 1-year break outside of finance to think of my next move (PE, HF, entrepreneurship, work for IFC, family business). I'd like to take advantage of this gap year to add a tier-1 global university to my CV while studying something unique and more prestigious than business/finance. I'm not considering an MBA given (i) I already have a MiM (ii) no time to study for GMAT (iii) know I'd end up at Booth/Insead at best given my profile. I was thinking of the following programs but happy to have additional recommendations:

  • Oxford MSc in Economic History
  • Cambridge MPhil in Development Studies
  • Imperial MSc Environmental Technology
  • Harvard/Columbia MPA

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your plan to take a break and pursue a prestigious program outside of finance is a solid way to diversify your profile and explore new opportunities. Here's a breakdown of your options and considerations:

  1. Oxford MSc in Economic History:

    • This program offers a unique blend of history and economics, which could be valuable if you're considering roles in IFC, policy-driven organizations, or even entrepreneurship with a focus on historical economic trends.
    • Oxford's brand name is globally recognized and will add significant prestige to your CV.
  2. Cambridge MPhil in Development Studies:

    • A great choice if you're leaning towards roles in international development, IFC, or impact investing.
    • Cambridge's academic environment and network in development-related fields are top-notch.
  3. Imperial MSc Environmental Technology:

    • This program aligns well with your Energy & Infrastructure background and could position you for roles in sustainability-focused PE, green tech entrepreneurship, or ESG investing.
    • Imperial is highly regarded in STEM fields, and this program has a strong practical and technical focus.
  4. Harvard/Columbia MPA:

    • These programs are excellent for transitioning into public policy, international organizations, or leadership roles in family businesses with a global focus.
    • The Ivy League brand and exposure to a diverse cohort could open doors in both finance-adjacent and non-finance sectors.

Additional Recommendations:

  • LSE MSc in Environmental Economics and Climate Change:

    • Combines economics with environmental studies, making it a strong fit for your background and future aspirations in energy, infrastructure, or sustainability.
    • LSE's reputation in economics and policy is unparalleled.
  • Stanford MS&E (Management Science & Engineering):

    • If you're open to the US, this program offers a mix of technical and management skills, ideal for entrepreneurship or transitioning into tech-related fields.
  • MIT Sloan Fellows Program:

    • Though not a traditional MSc, this program is designed for mid-career professionals and could be a good fit if you're looking for a shorter, impactful program.

Key Considerations:

  • Program Duration: Since you're looking for a 1-year program, ensure the options you shortlist fit this timeline.
  • Career Goals: Align the program with your next move—whether it's PE, HF, entrepreneurship, or IFC.
  • Networking Opportunities: Choose a program with a strong alumni network in your target industries or regions.

Each of these programs offers unique advantages, so your decision should hinge on your long-term career aspirations and the specific skills or networks you want to build during this break.

I was curious, columbia mpa requires a GRE/GMAT, so I imagine harvard would too.
My suggestion actually was going to be a combined MBA with such a program but alas you need a test score.

Anyways, it's not immediately clear to me what these programs are doing for you other than a year off?

wouldnt it be quite hard to get back into finance from a humanities degree? in theory it's a fantastic idea from a learning + life point of view but practically it may not be as feasible as you think.

when you say the best you could do with the MBA is booth/insead. these are both strictly tier 1 as well (booth globally, and insead more in its geography).

The masters is T1 for business schools in Europe normally. You landed a BB in London so case in point.

But I agree with you, I'm insanely bored as well of management/business studies. Wish I'd picked up STEM instead. Might go down your path eventually.
