Lower Ranked Schools for tier 2 consulting?

I'm currently struggling to get my GMAT where I want it to be. I've still got months to work on it, but part of me is concerned about getting into a top 25 program. I wanted to find out what schools might be best to look at/ what schools punch above their weight class in placements with tier 2 consulting firms or would be good for something like Brand Management/ Tech sales. Currently I am looking at safety schools for my MBA such as:

SMU,
Minnesota,
Kelley
Notre Dame
Vandy
Boston College
Wisconsin

Would love to know if anyone has any insight on how well they place into solid career paths.

Great list! Absent some information about what you have done to date - undergrad, work experience, community involvement.

You are more than the GMAT that you are struggling with.

In terms of schools... Minnesota - great for consulting Wisconsin - great for brand

Susan, should have posted that, but wanted to keep it short and sweet. There are other schools i'm looking at such as UNC, UT, CMU etc.... but these are the ones i can't find a ton of info on.

Stats: 3.18 GPA from Top State School in accounting and finance. GMAT: awaiting.... Work Experience: interned with a small IB, worked on a commodities trading desk at a small firm ( actually it went out of business after i left), am currently serving in the military as a supply officer. I am in charge of 2 divisions, one as the disbursing officer which puts me in charge of all cash management on the ship/ writing checks on behalf of the treasury/ managing the internal credit card system my branch has created and overseeing total accountability. I'm also the sales officer which has me running all ship store, vending, and service operations on the ship. I manage a crew of 20-25 people and maintain a running quarterly P&L statement while I essentially run a small business.

Don't hesitate to reach out directly for a consult. I am a Fuqua alum and spent ~10 years reading applications for Fuqua. Another counselor on my team was on adcom at UNC Kenan Flagler for ~15 years.

Your military service will be highly valued by both of these programs. Reach out to leaders in the military clubs if you aren't able to visit the schools. Adcom TOTALLY understands and appreciates your service and doesn't expect that everyone will be able to travel to visit the school.

rj1443,

Was there a trend to your grades? If there was a bad semester or year, what happened then?

Realize that your military experience is going to be highly valued by both business schools and future employers ( and the IB experience isn't bad either.) If your GMAT is competitive and context puts a better perspective on your GPA, then I would hope that you are also applying at a few top 15 or top 10 programs. Yes, these are excellent safeties also.

Vandy is particularly good in healthcare. If you're interested in tech, consider Foster and UT. Maybe also consider USC.

Linda Abraham If i can get my GMAT where I need it to be, My plan is to apply for a few M7's, but right now my 2 biggest targets are Duke and UNC. My Fiance is doing her post Doc at UNC, so being in that region would make life a lot easier. If I got into an MBA business schools">M7, I might have to take it though. After that I would love to do UT, Michigan and a few others.... but i am indeed preparing for the worst case scenario.

Sadly no trend for my grades. I started out great, but then was too stubborn to drop out of Accounting. I can however split my double degree to show that my accounting GPA was low, my Finance GPA was a bout a 3.6, and all of my quantitative courses were A's. I also lived in a Scholarship house that was designed for financially disadvantaged students, which came with it's own stresses of living with 17 people in one house. Neither of my parents went to college, so I might be considered a first generation student as well. Not sure if that might have any weight in the " why bad grades" category.

Also, i'm currently stationed overseas... and would like to apply after this tour, is there anything i can do to get noticed by schools since I can't really attend live events? Do they notice people who do webinars? Reach out to veterans associations?

rj,

Duke and UNC are fine programs. You might be interested in a podcast interview I had with Shari Hubert a few months ago. In providing context for your grades breaking out the grades may help, but accounting is kind of important in business so I'm not sure you want to say that accounting was your downfall.

Being first generation in college will also help.

However, the bottom line is that you need to provide evidence (for elite programs) that not only can you get a good test score, or perform in a professional setting, but that you know how to apply yourself in a demanding business program.

Certainly attending webinars may not "get you noticed," but it will be tracked and is a demonstration of interest. In addition, you may learn something that will strengthen our application so it's certainly a good idea. Reaching out to veterans associations on campus is a good idea. If there is an admissions director who is the primary contact for vets (and some schools will have such a person) then contact the school and be in touch with than person about questions that you may have. Just make sure that your questions aren't answered on P. 2 of the site.

Please let me know if you have additional questions. We have on staff a former admissions director at UNC and someone who worked in career placement Duke. Both them and their colleagues have extensive experience helping clients get accepted at these and other programs.

I took a practice test a year ago and got about a 550.... didn't study. Started studying about the last month or so, mostly on SC. Got another 550, but verbal was stronger and quant wasn't. Now I'm focused on quant and RC hoping I can get into the 700's. I'm using manhattan to learn, and magoosh for extra practice problems. I am now at a point where my SC on hard level problems is correct 80 percent of the time on average... now I just need to bring everything else up.
