Master in Finance Profile Evaluation

Hello everyone, I am considering applying for masters in the following universities this year, and I would like to know whether my profile was competitive enough.

I am a second year student in the Bsc in International Economics and Finance (Major in Finance) at Bocconi University. My GPA is 30/30 or 30.3/30 (counting honor grades as 31).

I have a 735 GMAT FE (V90, DI87, Q82)

I have 6 months work experience in audit/consulting and 4 months work experience in PE, both at local italian firms.

I have done a few volunteering extracurricular projects sponsored by the european union, mostly youth worker.

I am planning on applying to the following:

LSE Mfin and Mfinecon

Oxford MFE

LBS MFA

And I’m wondering about MIT Mfin, INSEAD Mfin and Hec MiM.

Thank you in advance.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your profile appears competitive for many of the programs you're targeting, but there are nuances to consider for each school:

Strengths:

  1. Academic Excellence: A GPA of 30/30 or 30.3/30 from Bocconi University is outstanding, especially given Bocconi's reputation as a top-tier institution in finance.
  2. GMAT Score: A 735 GMAT is highly competitive and aligns well with the expectations of top programs like LSE, Oxford, and MIT.
  3. Work Experience: Your 6 months in audit/consulting and 4 months in private equity (PE) provide a solid foundation, especially for finance-focused programs.
  4. Extracurriculars: Volunteering with EU-sponsored projects adds a unique dimension to your profile, showcasing leadership and community involvement.

Program-Specific Insights:

  1. LSE MFin and MFinEcon: Your academic and GMAT credentials are strong for LSE. However, LSE places significant emphasis on quantitative skills and prior finance-related experience, which you seem to meet.
  2. Oxford MFE: Oxford values a mix of academic rigor and practical experience. Your Bocconi background and PE experience align well, but ensure your application highlights leadership and global perspective.
  3. LBS MFA: LBS looks for candidates with strong academic records and some work experience. Your profile fits well, but LBS also values international exposure, so emphasize your volunteering and any global aspects of your internships.
  4. MIT MFin: MIT is highly competitive, with a strong focus on quantitative and technical skills. Your GMAT and Bocconi background are assets, but your work experience might be slightly less competitive compared to candidates with more global or brand-name firm exposure.
  5. INSEAD MFin: INSEAD values diverse and international profiles. Your EU volunteering and work experience in Italy are positives, but INSEAD often prefers candidates with more extensive work experience.
  6. HEC MiM: HEC is a strong option, as it values academic excellence and work experience. Your profile aligns well, and your GMAT score is above their average.

Recommendations:

  1. MIT MFin: Strengthen your application by emphasizing any technical skills (e.g., programming, financial modeling) and quantitative achievements.
  2. INSEAD MFin: If possible, gain additional international exposure or highlight global aspects of your existing experience.
  3. HEC MiM: This program is a safer option for you, given your strong academic and GMAT credentials.
  4. LSE, Oxford, LBS: These are strong fits, but tailor your application to highlight leadership, teamwork, and any global exposure.

Additional Tips:

  • Essays: Use your essays to differentiate yourself by emphasizing your unique experiences, such as your EU-sponsored volunteering projects.
  • Recommendations: Secure strong letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors who can attest to your academic and professional capabilities.
  • Networking: Reach out to alumni or current students from these programs to gain insights and strengthen your application.

Your profile is competitive for most of these programs, but the key will be tailoring your application to each school's specific values and priorities.

As the other commenter mentioned, you have a very strong profile that is competitive to all the top programs. The key to maximizing your odds now is to tell a convincing story of why each program. For admissions to my alma mater, the Oxford MFE, your GMAT is stellar now you need to focus on keeping your GPA strong, study hard for those exams (They care a lot about the GPA). They pride themselves on the the Finance Lab (do your research into what it is and talk about how you intend to participate and contribute to the Lab. Tell a clear story that explains how each program is going to help you reach your near term post grad career objectives.
