MBA after MSF?
I have a MSF (from pretty good school) and have been working in Market Risk at a respectable bank for the last 4 years. I am thinking about doing an MBA to further my career. Any thoughts?
Now, I know that the base salary that a typically MBA gets is around 100k, which is not higher than what I make currently. But I'm thinking about the long run. Hopefully, the MBA can open more doors for me and accelerate my career.
I do work on the trading floor so I am pretty familiar with Sales & Trading. While I am keeping the door open for trading, from what I have witnessed, it is not that easy to make big bucks in an investment bank as a trader in this environment. This is especially true now that a lot power seems to have shifted from traders to risk managers (at least at banks that know what they are doing...obviously I don't work at UBS). A few years ago it would be unheard of for risk managers to walk over to "big-swinging-dick" traders, questions him about his exposures, and tell him to close out positions, or even ban him from trading. Since 2008, I see a lot more of this, and generally a lot more risk monitoring, oversight, and independent valuations. So, unless you really lucky, chances are that starting a career in sell-side trading will be an uphill battle.
Thoughts?
Why?
The opportunity cost will be high for you, but not prohibitively high. I wouldn't do a FT MBA unless you could get into a T10 (maybe even T7) university.
