MBA for career change
Hey guys,
I've been working in the back office for about two years since finishing undergrad. The reason I took a back-office job out of college was that I wasn't able to secure a front-office role immediately and was eager to start working full time. I graduated from a non-target school with a little over a B average and did very little networking during college.
Although I have excelled in my role, it is a junior-level back-office position that is not particularly challenging and offers minimal career growth opportunities. While I recognize that my situation is stable and nothing to complain about, I find myself growing increasingly bored as my daily tasks are fairly monotonous and do not challenge me in the slightest.
Recently, I’ve been seriously considering going to business school to earn my MBA. My main goal in doing so would be to transition into a front-office role. I understand that this won’t be an easy task, but I’m prepared to put in the necessary work. It appears that networking with colleagues in other areas of my firm and across the industry could have the greatest impact on making this switch.
However, I’m wondering about the timing of going back to school. Should I pursue my MBA now, or would it be helpful to gain more experience and consider business school in another year or two? Additionally, I would prefer to attend school part-time while continuing to work for financial reasons. That said, I’ve heard that pursuing a full-time MBA may be more beneficial for those aiming to make a career change, especially when it comes to maximizing networking opportunities.
Appreciate hearing all thoughts and advice. Thanks!
Part time MBAs are trash. Since you have a 3.0 GPA you need to score high on the GMAT to be a splitter. If you don't have glowing recommendations now, bust your ass in your job until you do. You probably will have to shoot for a FT T20 MBA at best. M7 seems out of reach.
Grades matter if he or she is US domestic. If OP is international, GPAs don’t count for rankings. I’ve seen people with under 3 gpas get into top 15s let alone M7s. Your profile is holistic. IMO the only thing holding OP back is his lack of FO work experience.
