MSc Finance, MSc AFC, CEMS MIM? (Bocconi)

Hi everyone!

I'm currently enrolled in the BSc in Business Administration and Management at Bocconi and I have to decide my graduate. I really cannot choose between all these programs (AFC eng, Finance and CEMS) since I'm not quite sure about what I want to do in the future (for work). My GPA is high enough to get me into these programs, I know Finance is very prestigious and that could be very helpful to get into IB in London, but I'm afraid it could be too hard for me (since I'm not coming from a BSc in Economics and Finance and I've heard that the Economitrics exam is no joke). AFC could be great since I've heard it's not super demanding but I'm scared that being a less competitive program I won't be able to get the same job opportunities that other students at Finance or IM do. And finally, CEMS MIM could be an option too, but I'm not exactly sure how prestigious it is considered outside of Italy (and I'm kinda tired of management tbh). Should also add that I have zero relevant work experience and that the only thing I'm sure of is that I want to work abroad (wouldn't want to work in Italy, at least not in the long run).

What would my best shot be? Which Master is more recongnized abroad?

Thank you!

Thank you! But what about my lack of work experience? Do you think I'll still be able to get some Summer Internships? Also I was leaning towards AFC since many people told me you basically get the same job opportunities and the program is a bit easier.

Your post is not very informative. Are you in your final year of undergrad (so you have to apply to MSc now?), or can you still get experience? What is your GMAT like? Are there any other notable things on your CV (eg President of the Bocconi investment club)? You really wont get into a top tier or even good masters with a blank CV. It is possible to get into a top tier masters with only one really solid internship though, which is why I’m asking.

To be honest masters in finance from LSE/HEC/HSG etc exist for people who already have a strong CV to experience more study, get another year of applications and get a strong brand on their CV. This is because you’re already applying for jobs before masters even starts.

The applications to the above programmes are already competitive af, so why would they role dice on someone who is only now starting to think about finance and has 0 real life experience, if they have 50 people who could take the spot with a much better CV?

You can probably apply to a lower tier masters, but you would be facing the same problem - why would a company hire someone with 0 experience, if they have 50 people per spot who do have experience?

CEMS is overrated imho I know several people who did CEMS at unis in continental Europe and often it was treated like any other Master's degree offered by the given uni so it doesn't give much of a competetive edge. And most of them ended up at some start ups/corporate jobs/big 4. There's one person who managed to get a job in  PE but that's rare and was rather achieved by previous work experience than anything else. So, long story short, choose Finance if you want to pursue a career in Finance and I'm saying this as a person who doesn't have a Finance degree and I wish I had it as it makes life easier if you wanna work in Finance.

Thank you! So do you think the MSc AFC can still give me the chance to pursue a finance career?? I'm also afraid it will be percieved less competitive abroad (or in Milan compared to the finance students)
