MSF Advice - Tulane vs. Utah

Hey all,

I am a 2011 graduate of a west coast private school, a very good school, but not elite. I have been admitted into many MSF programs, but have been able to narrow it down to Tulane University and the University of Utah. I have career aspirations to work on the west coast (Seattle, Bay Area, Portland, LA, in that order) and would like to work in equity analysis for a small to mid-sized firm.

I know that Tulane's reputation is huge in the south but am wondering how far Utah's will take me in my west coast job search. I feel that both programs are solid but I do realize that Tulane has the overall better reputation. To be honest, I would really prefer to avoid going to New Orelans for a number a reasons, but I am not sure if I can pass up the prestige of Tulane.

Any input, no matter how minor, would be of great assistance. Oh yeah, and I need to decide within the week. Thanks so much.

RavenousNot trying to be a hater, but there are virtually no finance jobs in Seattle or Portland.

Secondly, if you want to work on the West Coast, why not go to a West Coast school? Your network will be much better than that of Tulane or Utah.

Portland, I agree. Seattle actually has quite a few...especially the smaller to mid size companies I would be targeting.

And Utah was about as west as I could get. I only have 8 months of relevant internships and many of the west coast schools with any sort of reputation require many years of full-time work exp (Seattle U comes to mind). I got into USF but found that program to be extremely weak in my opinion.

Seattle has a couple of SS firms that never hire (actually might only be one now?) and a couple of RIAs and hedge funds. The hedge funds almost exclusively hire people with experience in major financial cities at known firms, and the RIAs are generally pretty crusty. You might be the exception in hiring of course, or find a nice niche, but it's a pretty tough market to crack. I know for a fact that recruiting out of Seattle U is decent for the Seattle area since I have a friend that went there (even though most people on this board would poo-poo that school), so my recommendation would be to wait and try to get in somewhere else (such as Seattle U or whatever -- I'm not that familiar with MSF on the West Coast). Utah is going to be a really, really tough school to network out of. Waiting another year or two is better than spending time on something that doesn't help you.

If you have your heart set on the West coast, I agree with all the above posters. However, Tulane is a good program for ER. Look up the Burkenroad Reports. It's obviously not the same as actually being in ER at a BB, but it gives you practical experience.

Tulare is an established program. If you are dead set on Seattle you might want to look at the new program Pacific Lutheran University has. Not sure about recruiting, but it is in the area.

Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate it.

I did look at PLU... it's the first year of the program - starting fall 2012 - and they seem pretty disorganized (When I contacted them in January, they couldn't tell me absolutely what classes they would be offering). In a couple of years it could definitely compete with Seattle U but as of now, it is pretty weak. Thanks again.
