Networking for MSF Programs?

Hey Monkeys,

Had a quick question on how important networking with the respected MSF programs are. I'm currently a Junior in undergrad and plan on looking into some top MSF programs while studying for the GMAT this summer. I know networking can be very important at certain schools.

It is best to reach out to the admissions office/recruiters and show interest, or to reach out to alumni of the programs?

Thanks!

Current stats: - Large California state school (non-target) studying Finance / 3.5 cum GPA / 3.8 Major GPA - Internships at M&A shop, Small PE fund, and Graphics design agency - Leadership roles on campus

That's what I was planning on doing! I just did't know how the process worked in terms of recommendations from alumni > admissions on certain candidates and if that holds any value?

Btw, what would you say my chances were if I scored >700 on the GMAT?

Thanks @FinanceGuy15"

actually the MSF networking are average. it's the faculty and the platform (built for MBAs) and overlaps with MBAs that gets good. Especially MIT's M7 program definitely has lots of kicks in it.

Networking with the programs and alumni is important. You need to be careful that you don't become annoying, but I speak to admissions at all those schools and they remark about the massive number of applicants that apply and have zero contact with adcoms or current students. Shows that someone is just throwing an app in and not really taking the time to understand the school or the program.

Networking won't save you if your profile is abysmal, but it will help you out significantly if you are on the bubble. I was talking to an admissions officer this week and brought up a student that chose to visit in person and who had been talking to me. I know CMC and Vanderbilt both have current students that meet applicants and give their feedback. Nova is doing something similar.

It also helps with your essays (all of which are read).

I thought this was about a "Masters in Finance-Networking" degree. I was about to refer you to every third post on this site.

Same.

Absolutely. It obviously is not going to guarantee you a spot in the program, but talking with professors and admissions people there certainly will help. Even better if you find out who is part of the selection committee (you are not supposed to know, but if you are slimy you can find out a name) and innocently ask for a meeting to inquire about the program.
