I’ve never been impressed by anyone from NYU, even Stern.

Awaiting all the shit from the purple army. Just remember, it’s not my fault that you paid $300k for an inferiority complex.

why were you not impressed and why don’t you think it’s worth the money? I’m still deciding between RU and stern and if it’s worth the prestige...

I've looked at your comment history. Everyone has told you to go to Rutgers. Why is this a dilemma for you. It's 65k a fucking year cheaper for you what the shit.

NYU is not prestigious. It’s a safe name at which helicopter parents who wasted $200k+ on prep school can drop off their retards who couldn’t get into Williams, UChicago, Georgetown, or even Middlebury.

Stern kids are marginally brighter but are socially awkward and lack any sense of self awareness

Go to Rutgers. I have met plenty of much brighter people from UMich or UVA than the oversupply of dullards I’ve screened from NYU

Lmao okay I'm not a fan of Stern but this Krebs Cycle guy has something stuck up his ass. Stern kids are far and away fucking smarter than the rest of NYU. Every school he listed I would pick Stern over with the exception of Uchicago and Williams. That being said, they are in fact socially awkward fucks with zero fucking self awareness it hurts. If RU is 65k a year cheaper though, that seems like the easy option.

You sound so pompous and self-assured... I hate it. How are you so sure that you're in touch with reality and not some cynical 3rd year associate who tries to swing your dick around on an online forum? Aren't you a little old to be trash talking undergrads?

3rd year associate..?

I’m sorry that you hate my replies. Your response, however, only seems to support my viewpoint

Sorry to tell you, but most people will not be impressed by Stern grads when there are kids from MIT who are also vying for the same spots. It’s upsetting to hear but it’s the truth. I have a chip on my shoulder about not being able to wear Harvard gear, just like how someone from Cornell would be ashamed about having attended a state school

If you want to work in finance, grow a thicker skin. People WILL judge you by your undergrad. Some people will even judge you by what high school you attended. I might come off as a pompous dick, but there are MANY who are far more elitist than I could ever be who would never even deign to give advice to someone considering the likes of Stern for their undergraduate schooling

I wasn’t personally on YOU. I wasn’t not impressed by YOU. I didn’t find YOU to be autistic as I’ve likely never interacted with you specifically. Don’t take the comments of an internet stranger personally. Just aim to impress and charm whoever you meet at OCR

I love it but if you're into having a life outside of networking and grinding then it isn't for you. I enjoy the competition and need it to thrive but if you aren't prepared it can lead to problems bigger than not getting an IB internship.

Yes, I play tennis so the natural excitement of competition and wanting to be the best greatly influenced me going to stern and wanting to be in finance. Now, I don't want to romanticize stern because simply working hard is subjective and I would advise against seeking to wear that as a badge of honour. You need to be aware that stern is a powerhouse and the amount of students gunning for IB can be overbearing so do not go if you don't want to be surrounded by very driven individuals or prefer a balance at a college like Duke or Vanderbilt.

I dislike the students because they all scream arrogant and ignorant but if you can get past that then you should be okay. It is a miserable experience for most and the amount of mental issues I have seen or heard is downright depressing and grim.

I’m a rising senior at Stern. Going to GS/MS this summer. I can echo the sentiment above that a majority of kids at stern are awkward, boring, and way too intense, but there’s definitely still plenty of decent normal kids mixed in. Also, Greek life isn’t huge but a good amount of the “normal” kids at NYU still flock to them, so you can find chill kids if you know where to look. As far as the tuition is concerned, you’re ultimately just paying to live in NYC. You’re also obviously getting a great education that will open plenty of doors, but the price tag comes from the location. You’re right in the middle of manhattan. If that’s something you want, then the argument could be made that it’s worth the price. It’s definitely not a “traditional” college experience but there definitely isn’t a lack of social life. I’d just personally rather not be stuck going to the same frat parties for 4 straight years, but that’s just personal preference though. Either way, congrats on the acceptance.

I have friends at Stern. They tell me it is second only to Wharton. Sternies believe that their school is better for "business" than any other school including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.

Edit; This is the truth. I know one matriculating student and one current student and they both swear this up and down.

I have no idea why people are trying to spread obvious lies. It's ridiculous how much people try to make out Stern to be some type of hivemind of hardos where all everyone wants is investment banking and hates each other/themselves and has no social skills whatsoever and thinks they are better than harvard/wharton/yale students.

You guys are so fucking stupid - this is no different from saying that everyone at a "nontarget" is a frat star that only wants to party and doesn't care about academics, or that everyone at harvard is a WASPy rich kid who has only gotten everything handed down to him or her. It simplifies the truth and fails to recognize that the world is filled with various characters, with their own background, character, and story. Trying to box people into a certain caricature is counter-productive to what everyone in this forum aspires towards: truth, kindness, and success. There are students at "nontargets" who work their asses off, are brilliant, and are fine people. There are students at Harvard who have come from an underpriviledged background, are humble, and are fine people. There are definitely fine people at Stern.

No one will tell you, because people in the real world don't care enough about you people to not let you dig your own grave of prestige-whoring and close-mindedness, but out of a sense of altruism I will tell all of you "prospects" and fake professionals that you all, being so quick to judge others, spread lies, and talk shit about "school ranking" on an online forum, are actually the ones that are socially clueless and the "hardos" that you speak so displeasurely of yourself. Really think about the opinions that you have and the snobbishness that you somehow believe in. Cool people, successful people, DON'T think this way. And the fact that I have to explain that to you is just pathetic.

Most normal people at stern, or at any school for that matter, don't even think to rat on other schools, talk shit about others, contrary to what some of the idiots on this forum may suggest. In fact, NEWS FLASH. Most people at ANY school are normal people who don't think about the things that you people think about or say what you all say. They're focused on their own thing and their own life. And they leave all of you little kids to argue about prestige and dumb shit on your own on your computer while they go out, enjoy college, and do fun shit.

Amen. Its so ironic that people who stereotype and hate on an entire school as being full of “socially retarded hardos”, is, in fact, a socially retarded hardo

true but culture is self fulfilling, UCB/Ross/UVA, etc. don’t have the same stereotypes at ALL.

but 1000% agree- whoever needs the strength to make the best decisions for themselves instead of swaying to prevailing bandwagon sentiment (something that sucks about online forums). objectively I’d probably choose stern over Rutgers or whatever , but at the same time it’s easy to not be influenced by others when you see them as losers for acting a certain way.

it’s a huge decision because you have to decide whether the 240k is worth it. there are many reasons it is- there is some prestige in finance for going to stern, and generally some for going to NYU but Rutgers probably has a similar amount. truth is, you say you’re competitive and work harder than others- can you work hard enough to get IB from Rutgers then? yeah probably if you’re not full of shit. good luck

To be fair you kind of have to be a psychopath (obv exaggerated) to land into at least a decent IB gig out of college esp if you weren't aware of it first day as a freshman. The amount of preparation, networking and overall navigating the whole process kind of consumes a lot of your soul...

I went to Stern. Currently at a BB. Not sure what's up with the anti-Stern circlejerk in this thread. People should be able to make their point without being obnoxious about it.

The general gist of what you hear is true. Stern can be competitive and there's a lot of type-A finance hardos that create a toxic culture within their sphere of influence. NYU is still a school for rich kids and many students come from a wealthy background, albeit I don't necessarily think that's a negative.

However, if you stay away from the clown show that some – not all – business frats / finance clubs are, you can have an amazing time and still land a very good job. I personally was not involved in a single Stern club apart from going to their info sessions, and again I'm in BB IB. I've met wonderful people from all around the world, and you meet some really interesting individuals since NYU as a whole is a very diverse school. The upper class student body also feeds into this.

You in no way are forced to only interact with Sternies, and in fact I recommend branching out to other schools. I find the comments above about other NYU schools are immature and abrasive. CAS has a 9% acceptance rate, and I've met many pre-med / econ kids that blow Sternies out of the water not only in intellectual capability, but more importantly also in intellectual curiosity, which I find many Sternies lack. Other schools can be eccentric, but let people have their interests. Not everyone wants to become a corporate drone like all of us on this forum. Maybe it'd serve us well to learn a little bit about art galleries in Chelsea from some Gallatin kid. Use it to impress your next Hinge date.

We don't have a campus, but you have the most exciting city in the world at your fingertips. Going to NYU will make you become an adult a lot faster than being a fratlord at UVA would. There's pros and cons to that, of course, but if you see any NYU students sulking about not partying enough or no social life or whatever...let's just say it's not for a lack of opportunity.

Let me know if you have any more questions I can answer honestly.

Thanks for the info. I want to go to Stern but the only thing holding me back is the insane cost. It’s 80k while Rutgers is 15k a year. My mom can afford most of it, but we’d have to borrow some money probably from friends. I don’t know if it’s worth over a quarter of a million for undergrad? Any thoughts on that?

Seriously dude, just don't go to stern. It's not fair to force your parents to pay for that. It's not close to princeton or even cornell for that matter and as you can see from this thread there are significant downsides to the lifestyle there. There are more than enough Rutgers alumni for you to network with and they may be happier to help you compared to stern. If you have excellent grades and network well, you'll get a great offer.

I won’t repeat everything I said to you on the other thread. I’ll just add that it doesn’t really matter what you can afford, it matters if it’s worth it. It’s not. It’s a good school, but it’s not a golden ticket.

I truly feel bad for everyone who is betting a life-changing amount of money on the theory that a brand name college will be a ticket to a better life.

Call it an “investment” if you want, but it’s just a bet. All because it appears to have worked for prior generations.

First of all even for prior generations, it’s overrated. Yes a better school made a difference, but you have to control for the fact that the grads of better schools are also smarter, harder working etc on average.

Second, it won’t be as true in the future. I wont rant on that here, anyone can google the future of college. Long story short, the economy will care more about your actual skills than what finishing school you went to.

Third, it’s way more $ today even when adjusting for inflation.

Not a good bet to take. What the wise man does in the beginning, the fool does in the end.

I'll just throw in my perspective as an international. Some of the other schools that people mentioned above I have never heard of, and is relatively unknown outside their respective regions. NYU as a school is well known internationally, and I have heard of Stern. In fact, I know Stern grads in my country that were hired in IB, MBB, etc., over graduates that went to the top MBA schools here.

I have not applied yet, but the international reputation is one of my main considerations in choosing a school. It is why I would never pick Ross or Darden.

I'd be curious to know what other people's thoughts are on this; which schools they do consider to be national/international.

You’re coming on this forum and expecting something new. You won’t get it on this site, you will only get confirmation that what you’re feeling.

There’s people here who shit on Stern so much, as if it matters that there are socially awkward people there. All you should care about is whether you’ll like it (there’s fun and supportive people at Stern too) and if it will get you where you want (It will).

I did the same thing as you. I came to this forum to decide whether Stern was worth the money. Honestly, I didn’t need all the shit about lifestyle and the type of kid that goes there (a cutthroat wannabe ivy leaguer they say).

The only thing that helped me was people at the school DMing me and telling me about the clubs, pathways, network, etc.

Dude, Stern has prestige. Anybody outside of this forum thinks of Stern highly. Don’t worry about being considered a socially awkward, privileged, wanna Ivy League student.

I went to Stern, few years later I’m in the Middle Office. Not making as much money as FO, but prob a bit better for w/l balance and such.

I got some scholarship. Yes an No. It is what you make out of it in terms of your college experience. There may be other more affordable schools with better social experiences. Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

Wasn't considering Stern initially but they were actually pretty generous with aid and that ultimately became my deciding factor.

I think the most valuable thing for me was the ability to work during the school year. Those experiences taught me more than most of my classes. Given that business classes are pretty easy, working for 15-20 hours a week wasn't even that hard, and it felt good to earn some money in an expensive city. This also lets you try out opportunities in a few fields before deciding what you want to commit to in recruiting.

You do give up traditional campus life and all of that, so it's not for everyone, and you will meet some of the hardos that people love to reference. But it's overall still a good school in a great city with tons of different people, and you can have plenty of fun in your 4 years.

Also, nobody reacts as strongly as the people in this thread when I tell them where I went to school. Mostly it's just "oh cool, I just matched with a girl at NYU" and then they show you a picture of one of the 50k students to see if you know her and then you say "Ah don't know her but she's cute" and move on.
