NYU Stern Vs. UChicago Booth for an MBA?
I'm currently working in strategy for TV/Entertainment and looking to get an MBA (in strategy and corporate finance) in order to initially pivot into Consulting and in the long-term work in business development for a media company. I got accepted to NYU (with a full-ride) and Cornell so I was leaning towards NYU because it would be a more financially responsible choice, even if it was ranked slightly lower.
However, this week I was accepted to UChicago, without a scholarship, and because it's an M7 school and ranked 3rd, I'm not sure what to do. NYU would have more connections to media & entertainment whereas Booth has a higher rate of placing consultants (40% of their MBA class vs. NYU's 30%). Also, Booth has a more cross-functional academic approach where as NYU is far more customizable... Any advice from people in consulting or business development would be immensely helpful.
Thank you!
I would probably go back to Booth and ask for a scholarship given the full-ride from NYU. While it's better ranked, it's not worth $200K of post-tax dollars. I think NYU is the move here - especially if you see yourself staying in NYC. Where do you want to be post-graduation? Do you want to maximize chances at MBB or would be happy at a T2 consulting firm?
Working for a consulting firm with clients in Media and communications is more important to me than only targeting MBB so I think T2 would be a great options post-graduation. While Chicago has a lot of consulting firms, they don't have a media or entertainment industry presence from what I can tell so I don't see myself there for longer than a couple of years post-graduation. I see myself ending up in NY or coming back to LA eventually.
If you haven't found it already here is a link to Booth's 2020 employment report. You have to dig a bit to find it. As you noted consulting companies hire many graduates.

NYU and it’s not close. Save yourself 200k - if you miss getting MBB at NYU vs Booth it’s not because of the school. You’d be surprised how little prestige of schools matters after graduation. Literally no one cares.
Thanks for the reassurance! The money is so daunting and I feel as if I really am paying for prestige. The Booth alum list does speak for itself and keeps giving me pause ... What do you think DOES make people stand out when targeting consulting positions if the M7 categorization isn't it?
Only HSW is worth forgoing that full ride for, even then that's a big maybe considering your goals.
Guessing you are also in Media from your username? Is that why you think NYU would be just as effective in the long run compared booth/HSW?
Yes.The case for forgoing full scholarship at Stern for HSW would be for the brand power of these three schools, not necessarily they are better for your ST goals. Booth does not have that much brand power compared to these 3, that's why I said definitely not worth forgoing full ride for Booth, but maybe for HSW.
Bro Stern isn't even T20 for MBA.
I think NYU too. Booth you're probably more likely to get MBB, but most of placement is in Chicago (where there is no media..) and 200K isn't worth going to the midwest where less people will be interested in your longer term field
Take the money and go to NYU, particularly if you want to keep working adjacent to the media/entertainment industry after school. The rankings difference is only important to people on WSO and Poets & Quants. Employers don't care, they see it as a top MBA program.
