Off-Cycle Global Corporate Banking at BB or finish school

Hello fellow monkeys,

I am facing some difficulties and should probably work on my decision-making skills. But since I have been on WSO for so long and learned a lot from the posts on the forum, I thought I could bring my issue to the table as well.

A bit of context:
I am in my last year as an undergrad and already have a couple of internships behind me. A small/mid-cap Sell-side M&A boutique, M&A at a Big 4, and my last internship in corporate banking at a middle market bank. As I pretty much enjoyed the work there and the CB space I applied for an off-cycle CB position at two BBs and got an interview from each coming up.

Around the time I applied, I had taken a break from uni due to sickness and won't be graduating in 2024. Now have an unexpected schedule of modules to take before graduating in June 2025.
The question is, what if I (optimistically) do get an offer? Should I pursue it or concentrate on my modules and graduate since I am already set back because of the time out? (The exams take place during the off-cycle internship phase and it is pretty tough to do both).

If I do the off-cycle internship, which does not guarantee a return offer, my studies get pushed more and I graduate a year later possibly in 2026 because of the postponed exams.

Would it be best to withdraw my application and try chasing CB at BBs later after graduating (graduate programs, lateral hires etc.)?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and please cut me some slack I am only but a noob chimp here.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights to help you with your decision:

  1. Off-Cycle Internships and Graduation Delay:

    • Off-Cycle Internships: These are often more accommodating for students who have already graduated and can convert into full-time roles if you perform well and there is a business need. However, they can be more competitive and demanding, especially if you have exams during the internship phase.
    • Graduation Delay: Delaying graduation to pursue an internship can be risky, especially if the internship does not guarantee a return offer. This could push your graduation to 2026, which might not be ideal given your current setback.
  2. Alternative Strategies:

    • Focus on Studies: Given that you have already been set back due to illness, concentrating on your modules and graduating on time might be a safer bet. This ensures you complete your education without further delays.
    • Future Opportunities: You can always pursue CB roles at BBs through graduate programs or lateral hires after you graduate. This way, you can leverage your completed degree and previous internship experiences to secure a position.
  3. Considerations:

    • Technical Skills: Ensure your technical skills are strong, as off-cycle interviews can be more challenging and skew towards candidates with relevant experience.
    • Market Conditions: Keep an eye on the market conditions and hiring trends, as these can influence the availability of off-cycle and full-time positions.
  4. Decision-Making:

    • Risk vs. Reward: Weigh the potential benefits of the off-cycle internship against the risks of delaying your graduation. If the internship significantly enhances your career prospects and you are confident in managing both, it might be worth considering.
    • Long-Term Goals: Align your decision with your long-term career goals. If graduating on time and securing a full-time role post-graduation aligns better with your goals, prioritize your studies.

In summary, while off-cycle internships at BBs can be valuable, the potential delay in your graduation and the lack of a guaranteed return offer make it a risky choice. Focusing on your studies and pursuing CB roles after graduation might be a more prudent approach given your current situation.
