Options from Fordham

I'm going to be a freshman at Fordham in the fall in the honors program because I got a full tuition scholarship. It was that or going to Rutgers (in-state) because I didn't want to incur heavy debt for a semi-target. I'm not a diversity which I hear spells disaster for recruiting purposes. Most people on this forum say that if you go to Fordham you should transfer to a target after freshman year - but financially I don't think I can? Are there semi-targets that give significant transfer scholarships? Or should I just stay at Fordham? Am I screwed? Or if I grind from Fordham is it feasible

Are you GBHP or GSBLC? As someone who transferred from Fordham (sadly) I can tell you that it is really not end of the world. Fordham has a strong Alumni network and if you want an IB job/fin job, you can have it. I know plenty of people who go to BB's and EB's from Fordham. Make sure you leverage the clubs and go to the workshops. Since you are a fellow Ram, feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Quick addition: If you are one of the top people at Fordham (i.e, you win the consulting cup, PVH, CRP) you can really get anything you want. As long as you are proactive and put the effort in you can have whatever it is you want.

Honestly, not really. The only thing that will be different is that you'll take a bit more relevant coursework and most of your Gabelli courses will be with you GBHP cohort. While (in my opinion) the GBHP designation doesn't change much recruiting wise, you will be around higher achieving students who will help you out. Many of the GBHP students I know have gone to BB's and EB's not because of the GBHP designation, but because they are higher achievers.

Of course take everything I say with a grain of salt -- I wasn't GBHP and they wouldn't give it to me so I left.

TLDR: If you want it you can have it. The reason why we don't have a crazy IB recruiting rate is because half of the Gabelli Bros are too busy getting drunk on Arthur Ave every day instead of networking, being proactive, and keeping their GPA up. If you want to get into IB from Fordham, you have to do the following:

1. Keep your GPA up.
2. Join clubs, they aren't that selective and will gladly help you network. I recommend the Investment Banking Society; they frequently do resume reviews as well as assigning you a mentor. Sign up for the Lincoln Center Based Investment Banking Society and keep your eyes out for any interesting networking opportunities. I would also do the Private Equity/Venture Capital Club and the VCM Investment Club.

3. Be proactive. Make sure you know when early insight networking opportunities are happening. You can do this by checking handshake, PPD, and Career Services.
4. Try to apply for internships during the semester, ik there is a VC who recruits first years, and you can do it your fall or spring semester. I think the firm is called Starta, but you should get the info from the PE/VC Club.

Thanks for the advice. On a side note - do you know anything about CapM Advisors? I see a ton of Fordham people intern there early on and mention it a lot. Does it specifically target Fordham students for internships? Why is it so common among the high achieving students here?

Not every intern went to Fordham, but an MD there went to Fordham. Fordham actually has a really strong alumni network for that type of stuff. Also dosen't help that a certain professor is associated with capm and places some students there....

Word of advice from a former gabelli bro, transfer out asap. I am so thankful that I did.

Oh my bad, didn't see that. If you're really good you'll place but you need to be on your shit. Interning during the sem, network around the clock, clubs, gpa, etc. You need to want it and it will be hard but you can get it

Current undergrad at Gabelli... this years class placed a handful into BB and MM (GS IB, JPM IB&AM, handful at BofA, etc etc). Strong BofA presence and a designated team at BofA who are all Fordham alum who pretty much will try and get every qualified fordham student a first round and will push heavy for you. ~5 kids get Evercore first rounds. Couple got lazard (cap advisory I think). Barclays comes and takes ~20 kids to dinner as a first round. Wells has a networking event at their hudson yards office; cowen and stifel have coffee chats; mizuho & smbc take a handful for IB every year. Had 1 or 2 go to BX and top REPE in recent years. Opportunities for the top ~5% of the class are abundant. Lots of incompetent peers but every class has a handful of people on top of their game, especially during recruiting season.

Easy to get 4.0 and intern during year at boutique IB/PE

Don't know very many in ER tbh but there are a handful in S&T. But in regards to consulting, hardly any presence, not saying not possible but most students are gunning it for IB
