Placement IB w. SSE Master "Accounting&Financial Mngmt"

Cheers
I got an offer for MSc in Accounting&Financial Management at SSE. can anyone tell me abot the placement in IB in London? The latest Placement Report of SSE tells that the no of students placed in IB is roughly the same as for the "normal" Finance Master...however, I prefer own experiences.

The alternative choice is the Master of financ at Bocconi.

Thanks

Are you from the States?I am from Greece and I've just heard about this uni just in WSO...Its in Stockholm right? If you want London, you choose choose a UK program.Quite good MSF,and I think that they have the best placement in the City compared to other European programs.Imperial,LSE,Warwick,City are still accepting applications.Other possible universities are Durham,Manchester,Cardiff. Bocconi is nice, excellent if you want to work in Milan or in central Europe, but I think its a 2 year program, major setback since you can find other nice programs which are for 1 year.

Don't listen to this guy, he's raving mad.

SSE is one of the top 5 continental europe target schools for BBs in London. If you look on linkedin you'll see that a ton of SSErs end in IB in the city. The others europeans usually come ftom HEC, St. Gallen, Bocconi.

Also suggesting to someone interested in IB he should go to "City/Durham/Manchester/Cardiff" is outlandish. Those are not even tier 2 schools for IB in london. If you consider going to london, the target schools are: Oxbridge/LSE/LBS/Imperial/UCL and maybe warwick, in this exact order. Going anywhere else is a risk.

Oh, and the fact that the bocconi program is 2 years long is an advantage, not a flaw. That's because you're actually able to apply for an internship in the summer on your penultimate year, as opposed to applying as a last year student. Some banks don't even accept final year students, although having a brand name on your CV definitely helps.

cheers. I think a 2 year programm is an advantage as well for the sam reasons you mentioned. However, I wonder how suited the MSc in Accounting & financial management (NOT:FINANCE) is for IB in UK...

the SSE masters in Business and Economics, under which yours is a specialization if i am not mistaken, places very well. 2009 22% of all students went into IB, 2010 a bit less. this is from their employment report which you can find on their website (yes probably more guys % wise from finance). If you have your goals set and have some good past experience I dont think you will be at a disadvantage with the specialization in comparison to the finance one. you will have the same access to recruiters, london business week, london banking week etc.

I would take this one over Bocconi any time

go ahead and enjoy the time plus the summer inbetween is perfect for another internship (ah yes and banks do not only recruit people for their nordic desks at sse so you should be fine)

There has been so many posts about SSE Masters recently, I guess their admissions just went out.

SSE is the best business school in northern Europe. Every year they place people into London, at top BBs or domestic (Swedish) MBB offices. However, there is a catch. You will need to speak a Nordic language, as these placement are for London BB's Nordic desks, whether it's sales, IBD or trading. I do know that some students get placed in London anyway, but this is definitely a not common thing.

So, if you can get into the top schools in UK, let say Oxbridge, LSE/Imperial, take those. These will place you much better as an international students.

You will also get much better social life in London as an international students. The Swedish culture is very conservative. Put it nicely, they are shy, otherwise it's called rude.

everyone I have met from SSE in London worked in regular product/industry teams, none of them for a nordic desk (and i know many).

and i dont know what you are talking about but swedes party it up quite a lot and stockholm has a lot to offer in this sense (maybe my country is similar so i dont see a big difference there)

agreed obviously that if you get into Oxbridge or LSE take that for placement. but you will have plenty of options from SSE

Hi Driesetau, I also received offers for the Bocconi MSc in Finance and the SSE Master in Business and Economics with spec. in Accounting and Financial Management. Have you decided already where you'll go? I will most likely go to Stockholm, since the University offers amazing exchange possibilities with e.g. Stern, Columbia, Wharton. I couldn't find these with Bocconi. Also I talked to some investment bankers (M&A) from JP and BarCap. In principal they don't really make a difference and its more or less all about the internship you do in the summer. Since both MSc include the possibility of doing an internship I see no major difference here. (okay in Bocconi its mandatory and you get credit point i think). Further Bocconi is more expensive than Stockholm, since the merit scholarship in Bocconi is only for one year and witha high gmat you don't pay tuition at SSE.

I would like to hear from you what your final decision is and maybe we can get in touch prior! cheers!
