Q: UK to US undergrad grade conversion for Masters

I’m going to keep this short and sweet. My UK to US converted GPA is 3.9 but on my actual grade report it doesn’t give the reader my specific GPA, just my grade classification which people get with a GPA between 3.6-3.9. How do (Or do) US unis actually see if you were on the higher end of that classification if I apply?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Grade Classification Understanding: US universities are generally familiar with the UK grading system and understand the classifications. They know that a First Class or Upper Second Class degree corresponds to a range of GPAs.

  2. Supplementary Information: To highlight that you are on the higher end of your classification, you can provide additional documentation or context in your application. This could include:

    • Transcripts: Ensure your transcripts are detailed and, if possible, include a breakdown of your grades.
    • Letters of Recommendation: Ask your recommenders to mention your specific academic performance and rank within your class.
    • Personal Statement: Use your personal statement to briefly explain your academic achievements and where you stand within your classification.
  3. Admissions Perspective: Admissions committees at US universities will look at the overall context of your application, including your GPA, test scores, work experience, and other achievements. They are used to evaluating international applicants and will take a holistic view of your qualifications.

  4. Conversion Tools: Some universities might use specific conversion tools or services to better understand your academic performance. You can also use recognized GPA conversion services to provide a more precise GPA if needed.

By providing clear and detailed information, you can help US universities accurately assess your academic performance and ensure they understand that you are on the higher end of your grade classification.

they dont look at your converted gpa. they get 1000s of applications from the UK and have viewed such applications for decades, they look at your grades in the context of the British grading system. i don't think they care about what the grade is converted to gpa, especially since gpa calculations differ across universities in the US

Thanks for your comment especially on this ancient post. The point is that I only have A’s and B’s but I was one tenth away from a first. My question I guess is will I be treated like some guy who barely scraped a 2:1 with B’s and C’s?
