Regular FT MBA vs. Tech focused MBA
I plan on pursuing an MBA in order to switch careers---currently in corp. banking and after 6 years, I'm pretty tired of it and want to do something else. I'm aiming to do something in the tech industry, whether be at mature firm (GOOG, AAPL, MSFT, etc) or at a VC. I'm at a very early stage (GMAT is scheduled for June and plan to matriculate in 2021) but my goal is a top 20 program.
That being said, I noticed that two schools I plan to apply to have 1 year, tech focused MBA programs, Cornell and NYU. I haven't researched others, but does anyone have any thoughts on these and other tech focused programs? I'm leaning towards a regular full time MBA program to keep my options open (including VC), but also cognizant of an additonal year with no income.
Those programs are excellent options if you know you want to work in tech, which you seem to do. If you are not so sure about your commitment to tech, then you're probably better off with that traditional two-year MBA degree.
As it happens, I recently interviewed Cornell Tech's dean and admissions director and a little earlier NYU's admissions dean:
