Schulich IMBA v/s Rotman MBA v/s Queen's MBA

Hi all, a newbie here... just looking for some opinions on Schulich (York) IMBA v/s Rotman (Toronto) MBA v/s Queen's MBA for eventually working in healthcare IT management. I was recently offered places on the first two for this Fall, and at Queen's for next year. My work background is in IT systems and service management, with previous education in Computing and Life Sciences.

Going by the postings on this site, the impression I get is that Rotman is better than Schulich and some do speak highly about Queen's too. However, I am not going for Finance or Investment Banking. Rather for a career in advising on e-health, and adopting and managing technological innovation in healthcare, and to work with either a public/private healthcare organisation or a healthcare consulting practice. The aspects that I value are the calibre of peers, strength of alumni in healthcare, and the learning environment at the school. I realise the value of connecting with many and different kinds of people, however, instinctively I'd prefer a small sized cohort :) And lastly, the international exposure (exchange, internship) would be important as I intend to work in Europe and Asia for a few years.

My options are: - pursue Rotman MBA, specialise in Health Sector Management - pursue Schulich IMBA, specialise in Health Industry Management - go to Queen's next year, get a solid generalist MBA - apply for next year to Ivey (Health Sector MBA) and a few other schools (Insead, Judge, Oxford)

I would appreciate any perspectives on these schools, given my goals and intent to go for the best possible opportunity. Thanks a lot!

evilbyaccidentCheck out the placement reports of the schools you mentioned.

The average salaries that I see in the placement reports for Class of 2009 seem to convey a better picture for Schulich.

Schulich: $87K mean, $86.2K median, $45-200K range, $77.6K avg for Health Services/Medical/Pharm/Biotech Rotman: $85.4K mean, $76K median, $45-200K range, $69.6K avg for Health Care/Services, $87.7K avg for Biotech/Pharm Queen's: No placement report available yet for Class of 2009.

For class of 2008, it's the same. Avg base salary: Schulich>Rotman>Queen's.

On the other hand, FT or BW rankings suggest that Rotman or Queen's is better.

You should also look at the percentage breakdown of people employed in the health care sector post MBA.

I'm not sure why you are considering the Financial Times rankings, as you stated in your previous post that you had no interest in the financial services sector, and Business Week is focused primarily on the United States.

If it were me I would probably go to Queen's, but I'm biased against UofT and York.

In my experience UofT does absolutely NOTHING to help its graduates find jobs, and both the student body and faculty tend to be arrogant and insecure.

York is wayyyyyy too left wing for me, and, frankly, the students and professors are just not that bright. Plus it's in the ghetto.

Queen's grads tend to be fun, intelligent people that I would enjoy working with.

For me Queen's>UofT>Schulich

Hi evilbyaccident, appreciate your perspective. As far as the stats go for people employed in the healthcare sector, it's comparable for Schulich (8%) and Rotman (7%). Queen's unfortunately doesn't have anything out yet for class of 2009, but for the earlier class, it shows 2% employed in the bio-pharma industry.

Again, you see, the stats seem to favor Schulich. However, I too have read a few good comments and more not-so-good observations about the school, the calibre of the students, and its general perception by employers. And Schulich does not interview most of the students it selects. All this makes me not so sure about it, despite the impressive ROI. Its location is not ideal, but I am willing to accept it.

As for Queen's, their admissions staff, I must admit, came across as the most welcoming and helpful. They invited me to spend a day at the school and I was impressed with the level of support and personal attention. The one class I attended there was not very lively though... didn't see much interaction or participation from students. Met with a few current students too and they did come across as intelligent. But their placement stats (class of 2008) are the weakest of the three.

I have not though read such strong comments about UoT/Rotman :) Their Corporate Connections Centre, I read somewhere, does a good job. Could you please elaborate on your experience of Rotman? Why do you think the students and faculty there are insecure? I visited Rotman, and overall my experience was alright. Arrogance, perhaps a bit :)

At an undergraduate level, Rotman is okay. Recruiting is not as active as I hoped it to be, but we have a fair amount of alum on every field every where across the globe, and it's just a matter of getting good marks and networking with alums to get to where you need to be. So what Im saying that choose the school were you feel most home, that is, the environment that you can thrive in.
