Seeking guidance in getting from the military to NYU Stern
So I'm 23 and in the Air Force with about a year left. I want to go to NYU Stern next year when I get out. So far I have 6 general ed type classes between a community college in New Jersey and an online school (which is regionally accredited). Before I get out and hopefully attend NYU next year (if I get in) I want to kick into high gear and knock out as many general ed type classes as possible.
Will NYU accept transfer credits from 2 schools like that? 5 of my classes I hope to transfer are from the NJ CC, which I can take classes online as well. Should I just switch back to that school and transfer all the credits I can from there and hope they'll also take the credit from the online school I'm currently enrolled in?
They may....They can make you take tests in certain subjects to test your learning. Email someone. As a former military person I can tell you that if you email them with a nicely worded email expressing some of your concerns or asking a question Stern will email you back and help you out. You also have to ask yourself if the debt from NYU is worth it. NYU offers almost nothing for yellow ribbon so you will be paying a significant chunk each year you are there.
Yeah I've figured out that with the GI Bill plus yellow ribbon I'm only covered for about $25k. So that leaves me with figuring out how to come up with an additional $20k each year I would go there. So far my options would be to apply for as many grants and scholarships as possible, but I don't know how realistic it would be to somehow cover that $20k without any loans. I will still apply to NYU and then apply for all the scholarships I can get and see what happens.
As an alternative I've looked at CUNY, would that be worth it? Or would any important person in the financial sector just laugh when they see it on a resume? I know a couple of Army guys who attend Columbia, and they say I should apply there and that they are more generous with the yellow ribbon, but I haven't done much research on that school yet, other than their business school seems to be all MBA/Graduate stuff. Do they have an undergraduate business degree plan? Any other ideas? I just want to figure out the best course of action while I have the time to plan it still. Thanks
Yea, the Columbia thing is an odd situation. You will be applying to the General Studies College. Different than the typical Columbia College. Baruch represents pretty well in some circles. I work with a load of Stern guys, but there are also a decent amount of non target as well. Go where you feel the best fit, get good grades and network.
If his profile is strong enough, there's no reason why he shouldn't apply to CC. If he has a realistic chance at Stern, then he should have a reasonable chance at CC if he tells a good story. He's only 23.
