Sophomore Summer Internship from a Target

Hi, I'm a rising sophomore at a target school (Duke/UChicago) looking to secure an internship for my sophomore summer before junior year recruiting. I'm an Asian Male, so not eligible for any diversity internships, but I did a finance-related internship over the school year and am doing a no name private equity internship currently for my freshman summer.

I know that BBs are out of reach since they're usually diversity only, but are there any reputable/'known' MM IB, MM PE firms, Credit/Alts places, or HFs offering sophomore summer internships that someone with my profile could reasonably attain (I know that I listed a lot of industries, but I'm doing so bc not many strong firms offer nondiverse sophomore summer internships.)?

I'm primarily looking for a somewhat recognizable/reputable place to strengthen my resume for junior summer recruiting and to have a good learning experience. I already scoured WSO and found a few firms that take nondiverse interns for sophomore year, but any other firms or  suggestions of places to find firms with sophomore summer opportunities would be very much appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions for securing a sophomore summer internship as a non-diverse candidate:

Potential Firms and Strategies:

  1. Boutique and Middle Market (MM) Banks:

    • Networking: Utilize your alumni network and cold email local boutique and MM banks. This approach has been highlighted as effective in previous WSO threads.
    • Examples: While specific names aren't provided in the context, firms in New York or Boston are often mentioned as good starting points.
  2. Private Equity (PE) Firms:

    • Small/Regional PE Firms: These firms are more likely to offer internships to sophomores. Your current internship at a no-name PE firm is a good stepping stone.
    • Cold Outreach: Similar to IB, cold emailing and leveraging connections can open doors.
  3. Credit/Alternative Investment Firms:

    • Research and Apply: Look for firms that have a history of hiring sophomores. This might require extensive research and outreach.
  4. Hedge Funds (HFs):

    • Smaller HFs: Smaller hedge funds might be more flexible in their hiring practices and open to taking on sophomores.

Additional Tips:

  • Persistence: As noted in the WSO threads, sending out a large number of emails (up to 300) can significantly increase your chances of landing an internship.
  • Leverage Existing Experience: Highlight your finance-related internship and current PE internship in your applications to demonstrate relevant experience.
  • Alumni Network: Reach out to alumni from your school who are working in the industry. They can provide valuable insights and potentially refer you to opportunities.

Resources:

  • WSO Forums: Continue to scour the WSO forums for updated information and potential leads. Threads like the "2018 Sophomore Summer Analyst Recruiting Megathread Page" can be particularly useful.
  • Career Services: Utilize your school's career services for additional support and resources.

By focusing on these strategies and being persistent in your outreach, you can increase your chances of securing a reputable internship for your sophomore summer. Best of luck!
