Starting in January 2024 - How do I knock my first year out of the park?
Title says most of it. Graduated from B-School in May with offer from one of the larger firms (want to keep things semi-private - think MBB or Big 4 in a major city - essentially not a boutique). Was supposed to start in September, but got pushed to January with a stipend in the mean time.
I really want to do a good job in this first year and get the best reviews I can. I feel rusty as hell from not working/being in school for so long. Definitely will brush up on excel and PowerPoint before starting, and will do a bunch of networking in the month or so beforehand, but any other advice is appreciated. I read the top post about the guy who got fired from OW, and will definitely put that advice into practice, but would be interested to hear about other people who had successful first years after B-School.
Congrats on your new role! It's great to see you're eager to make a strong start. Here are some tips based on the most helpful WSO content:
Excel and PowerPoint Skills: You're on the right track with brushing up on these. They're essential tools in the consulting world.
Networking: This is key. Building strong relationships with your colleagues can open doors and provide valuable learning opportunities.
Understand the Big Picture: Always try to understand how your work fits into the larger project and the client's overall business. This will help you make more meaningful contributions.
Communication Skills: Sharpen your communication skills. Being able to clearly and effectively communicate your ideas is crucial in consulting.
Time Management: Learn to prioritize your tasks and manage your time effectively. This is especially important in a fast-paced consulting environment.
Stay Informed: Keep up with industry news and the specifics of your group and their past projects. This will help you stay relevant and bring fresh ideas to the table.
Be Proactive: Don't wait for tasks to be assigned to you. Show initiative and look for ways to contribute to the team.
Ask for Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from your superiors. This will help you understand where you're doing well and where you can improve.
Remember, the goal is not just to work hard, but to work smart. Focus on delivering results and adding value to your team and your clients. Good luck!

edit The bot above tried to give the short version of my older answer from here:
Realise what I said above is wrong, misread the thread name (wasn't my advice, my bad!). The link still should have more relevant info:
