Tepper Vs Rotman Vs McCombs - Texas(Austin)

Primates ...

I have been admitted to the MBA programs of three B-schools: CMU-Tepper, Toronto-Rotman and McCombs-Texas.

Considering that I don't come from a finance background which school should I be looking at to launch a career in asset-management.

Cheers

Based on rankings, Tepper is the best. Tepper is top 15 according to most publications. However, WSJ ranked them #4 overall, and #3 for finance according to employer surveys in their last ranking.

You can't rely on just rankings though. Research as much as you can into career placement by job function, company, geography, etc.

Note: If you wanted to work in Texas, McCombs would def be the best.

I say Tepper is definitely a rising star, from talking to faculty and MBAs around here. Plan a visit because the new building is also getting an upgrade.

I would pick Tepper (I'm an ugrad so take that with a grain of salt) but my TA's who are in the MBA program are all pretty successful. Now of course this data may be skewed since I only have TA samples but these people generally need the money or are too lazy to grade my papers so I would even expect other MBA students to be just as successful, if not more so.

Tepper definitely has a quantitative feel though but the school is trying to keep that reputation while shoring up its soft-core and leadership reputation.

Tepper. Forget Rotman. McCombs is a great school especially if you want to be in Texas/Southeast US.

But assuming you want to go to Wall Street, Tepper is the clear favorite. It's a quant school, very strong for Asset Management. You will find MANY other people are career changers and the quant/rigorous program will enable you to make the change.

Proximity to NYC is a huge advantage to landing a job on Wall Street. You'll need to be traveling to NYC all fall to network with alumni, and there are easy flights from Pittsburgh (or drive). Tepper is also the clear leader in terms of rankings, for what it's worth. Small program, VERY quant focused. It's a rigorous program, so bring your A-game. They're trying hard to improve in the rankings, and are doing so by trying to impress recruiters with the quality of their candidates.

Texas has a huge brand name and Austin is undoubtedly going to be a more fun experience than Pittsburgh. You'll have much better looking women (undergrads) and you'll get the Texas sun. I am not sure what banks recruit at McCombs, it's probably on their website but keep in mind that it's probably regional offices mostly. McCombs is the best b school in that part of the US, by far, so I'm sure they have placed numerous successful people in all kinds of finance jobs in H-town, dallas, and across the south. Texas has a traditional "case study" method of instruction.

I don't know shit about Rotman but unless you are Canadian or whatever, I have never seen it on a single top-20 list. I doubt it is in the same league as the other two. I've heard CMU Tepper as a school that is really improving. It's a great place to study finance, so I'd say that's your best bet.

Big decision however, and you'll need to decide for yourself. Maybe visit campuses and attend a class or two. Reach out to current students and ask them the tough questions. good luck. I am a 1st year mba right now and it's tough to make the transition into finance, hopefully you will be coming out at the tail end of things and have a better environment! saying that, you'll want to make sure you've got the best chances possible by going to the best school possible.

Wharton and Tepper for Ugrad are closer than they are for MBA. Still, Tepper is a top 10 MBA school IMO since it is improving so much and has such a strong quant program. I personally wouldn't go for MBA because everyone says it is pretty rigorous. The curve sucks but if you do a good job, the opportunities are very nice. The building looks nice too.

PS: Tepper has a site in NYC as well as in Qatar.

@juniorr: I knew about the site in NYC, but Qatar is news, how do you know about this?

@MonumentMan: Thanks for the advice. I concur Texas will have much better looking woman than Tepper :)

Can you share which MBA program are you currently enrolled in?

I didn't research it but I used to work with someone who graduated from Tepper in Qatar, though it may have been his Ugrad. I definitely know there is a pretty big site there.

Personally I think not taking Tepper in this case would be a mistake. It's a fantastic school and since WSJ ranks mostly by recruiter opinions it is a good sign that Tepper ranks either 3rd or 4th or whatnot by that ranking.

the best way for an outsider is to look at career survey/reports. Which points to Tepper. Plus I too have heard of Tepper's quant skills which might be especially good for AM.
